But somewhere along the way, the coffee table became the default — something every living room is supposed to have, regardless of whether the space actually calls for it. So we end up with too-big tables crowding small rooms, too-small tables floating in front of sectionals, and surfaces piled with remotes, mail, and last week's magazines.

If you've ever looked at your coffee table and thought something is off here and I can't say what, this is for you. We're going to walk through three questions in order: does your living room actually need a coffee table, what should you buy if it does, and how do you style the one you have so it always looks pulled together.

Does your living room actually need a coffee table?

Not every living room does. Before you buy one, or before you commit to keeping the one you have, it's worth asking what the room actually needs from that piece of furniture.

When a coffee table is the right call: if your living room is built around a long sofa or a sectional, if you regularly entertain, if you and your family actually use the surface (drinks, board games, books), and if the room has the proportions to hold a real piece without crowding. In that case, the coffee table earns its place — and a beautiful one becomes a focal point.

When a coffee table isn't the right call: if your living room is small, if you have young children running through it, if you've never once used your current coffee table for anything except as a place where mail accumulates, or if the room is more of a passageway than a sit-and-stay space. In those cases, you'll be happier with one of the alternatives below.

An ottoman. Soft, no sharp corners, doubles as seating, and you can still put a tray on it to hold drinks. For families with young kids or for casual, family-first rooms, this is a great choice.

A pair of small side tables or nesting tables. Gives you the surface you need without committing the whole center of the room to one piece. Flexible, easy to rearrange, beautiful when chosen well.

A single C-table next to the sofa. Slides right up to where you're sitting, holds a drink and a book, and disappears when you don't need it. Particularly good for sectionals where a central coffee table feels disproportionate.

If a coffee table is right for your room: what to look for

Once you've decided a coffee table earns its place, the buying decision matters more than most homeowners realize. Here's what to think through before you commit.

Shape. Round tables work beautifully in small spaces, in rooms with young children (no sharp corners), and in rooms where traffic flows around the seating. Rectangular tables are the right call for sectionals and long sofas — anything else looks under-scaled. A pair of square tables, pushed together or used separately, gives you flexibility in larger rooms.

Size. The most-broken rule in living room design: your coffee table should be roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa. Smaller than that and it floats; larger and it crowds. Measure before you shop, and tape out the footprint on your floor with painter's tape if you're not sure.

Height. This is the rule almost nobody knows. Your coffee table should be within an inch or two of the height of your sofa cushion — same height, or slightly lower. A coffee table that's too tall makes the sofa feel low and awkward; one that's too short looks disconnected.

Distance from the sofa. Plan for 14 to 18 inches of clearance between the front of the sofa and the edge of the coffee table. Close enough to set down a drink without leaning, far enough to walk past comfortably.

Material. This is where personality lives. A piece of natural wood adds warmth and softens a room. Stone or marble feels grounded and sculptural. A glass top keeps a small room feeling open. An upholstered ottoman is the softest option. Choose the material that contrasts with what's around it — if your sofa is upholstered and your floors are wood, a stone or glass table adds a third element. If your room is full of hard surfaces, soften it with an ottoman.

How to style a coffee table that always looks pulled together

Once the table is right, the styling is the easy part. Designers use a simple three-layer framework, and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Layer 1: The anchor. Start with something that grounds the arrangement and gives it edges. A tray is the simplest and most forgiving anchor — it instantly turns "clutter" into "vignette." A stack of two or three beautiful books works too. The anchor is what tells the eye where the arrangement begins and ends.

Layer 2: The organic. Something natural and alive. Fresh flowers, a small plant, a bowl of fruit, a sprig of greenery from your yard, even a single beautiful branch. This is the layer most homeowners skip, and it's the layer that makes the coffee table feel lived in instead of staged.

Layer 3: The personal. Something that says you actually live here. A beautiful book you've actually read. An object from a meaningful trip. A small piece of art propped against a stack. • Use a tray. Everything inside a tray reads as intentional. Everything outside a tray reads as clutter. This is the single biggest unlock for most homeowners.

• Old magazines. If you haven't read it in three months, it's not styling.
• Too many candles. One beautiful candle reads as intentional. Five reads as a clearance display.

Take five minutes, clear everything off, and start fresh with the three-layer framework. You'll be surprised how different the whole room feels.

What hardware finish should you choose? Unlacquered brass and matte black are both safe long-term picks. If your faucet and lighting are stainless or chrome, mixing in brass or black hardware actually looks more designed, not less.

A few rules that will save you from a redo:

• Size up. Most builder-grade pulls are too small for the cabinet doors they sit on. A 5- or 6-inch pull on a standard cabinet door reads more custom than the 3-inch version that came with the house.

• As a general rule, use pulls on drawers and knobs on doors. This is the convention in higher-end kitchens. But don't be afraid to use the style that best suits your kitchen.

• Buy one of each first. Order a single knob and pull before committing to 30 of them.

3. Upgrade the lighting

Builder-grade kitchens are almost always under-lit, and the lighting that is there tends to be a single flush-mount fixture in the center of the ceiling. Two changes make an outsized difference:

Pendant lights over the island. Two or three pendants instantly create a focal point and define the island as its own zone. This is the lighting move that shows up in every magazine-worthy kitchen.

Builder-grade kitchens almost always come with an over-the-range microwave doing double duty as the ventilation. You might remember the stunning Hollywood Glam home we featured in a previous article. Well, that client came back to us with an exciting new challenge--and a tight deadline. 

He had just purchased a vacation property in New Smyrna Beach, completely sight unseen. The goal? Have it guest-ready before the holidays. Most of the home was already furnished, but two bedrooms needed our attention, and the client wanted something special--a unique feature that would make visitors remember this beach house long after they checked out.

This is exactly the kind of custom vacation home design project we love!

A Bunk Room Built for Adventure

One of the bedrooms needed to accommodate a crowd. Families traveling to the beach often bring everyone--kids, cousins, grandparents--and having flexible sleeping arrangements can make or break a property's appeal. 

My team built custom bunk beds designed to maximize the space while creating a room that feels intentional, not improvised. We went with a navy blue and red nautical theme that nods to the coastal location without veering into kitschy territory. The result is a space that kids love and parents appreciate--sturdy, stylish, and perfectly suited for a beach house. 

Crisp white shiplap on the walls beside the bunk beds complete the look, adding texture and that classic coastal charm.

A Serene Retreat for Grown-Ups

The second bedroom called for a different approach entirely. While not the master suite, this room needed to feel like a true retreat for adult guests--a place to unwind after long days on the sand.  

We designed the space around a palette of soft creams with contemporary, crisp lines that give the room a fresh and modern feel. Blue and tan bedding brings in just enough coastal warmth to remind you that you're steps from the Atlantic, while the overall aesthetic stays sophisticated and calming. It's the kind of room where you actually want to sleep in. 

The Mural That Makes Memories

Now for the showstopper.

Our client wanted something guests would talk about, photograph, and remember. We brought in a talented mural artist to transform the wall beside the pool into a celebration of everything that makes New Smyrna Beach special. 

The mural features the Atlantic Ocean, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and surfers catching waves--a scene that captures the laid-back spirit of this beloved beach town. The centerpiece is the iconic Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, located just across the inlet from New Smyrna Beach. Standing as the second tallest masonry lighthouse in the country and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998, it remains a destination for visitors from around the world. Having it featured in the mural gives guests a beautiful visual connection to the area's history and charm. 

And here's another fun detail: there's a basketball hoop built right into the center of the mural. Guests swimming in the pool can shoot hoops against that gorgeous backdrop. It's playful, unexpected, and exactly the kind of detail that elevates a property from nice to unforgettable.

My son Jonathan and I had the pleasure of transforming this Orlando property into a true showstopper, complete with a one-of-a-kind surprise: an entire room converted into an "America's Got Talent"-style stage, complete with audience seating, a judges' table with working buzzers, and a dressing area for guests ready for their close-up.

A Grand Entrance With a Secret Surprise

Every great Orlando vacation rental design starts at the front door—and this one makes an unforgettable first impression.

The entry foyer welcomes guests with elegance and warmth, setting the tone for the glamour that awaits throughout the home. We painted the entire first floor in Sherwin-Williams 9142 Moscow Midnight, a stunning blue teal that strikes the perfect balance between dramatic and inviting. It's the kind of color that feels sophisticated without being cold—exactly right for a Hollywood-inspired retreat.

But the real showstopper? That red telephone booth.

It looks like a striking vintage décor piece, but step inside and you'll discover it's actually a hidden passageway leading to the home's America's Got Talent Theater. It's the kind of playful, unexpected detail that turns a vacation rental into an experience guests will talk about long after they check out.

A Hallway Straight Out of Hollywood

Step through the red telephone booth and you're instantly transported. The hallway beyond looks like it belongs on a Hollywood set—moody, cinematic, and full of anticipation for what's around the corner.

From here, guests choose their own adventure. Turn one way and you'll find a fully equipped arcade room. Turn the other and you'll enter the America's Got Talent Theater, complete with stage, judges' table, and working buzzers.

Whether your guests want to battle it out on a classic arcade game or perform for a crowd, this home has it covered. No Hollywood home is complete without a photo op—and this one delivers. A small alcove was transformed into a dedicated photo booth space, featuring a custom mural of the iconic Hollywood sign. Pair that with a portable photo booth machine (a great Amazon find!), and guests have everything they need to capture vacation memories in style.

Strike a pose, snap a pic, and watch your friends back home wonder if you've jetted off to California. It's a simple, fun touch that guests absolutely love—and the kind of thoughtful detail that sets great Orlando vacation rental design apart from the rest.

The home's main living space proves that glamour and functionality go hand in hand. The walls continue in that gorgeous Sherwin-Williams Moscow Midnight. PRO designer tip: the trim and baseboards are painted in the same color, creating a seamless, elevated look that makes the ceilings feel higher and the space feel more intentional. Against this rich blue teal backdrop, modern furnishings and carefully chosen décor keep the Hollywood Glam motif alive without feeling over the top.

The Primary Suite: Elegant Retreat

After a day of arcade battles and stage performances, every guest deserves a beautiful place to unwind. Two primary suites deliver an elegant yet comfortable retreat that feels like a five-star escape.

The walls in the room featured below are painted in Sherwin-Williams 6279 Black Swan, a deep blue that brings a sense of calm and sophistication to the space. It's the perfect complement to the Moscow Midnight used throughout the main floor—different enough to feel special, but still in harmony with the home's overall palette.

Thoughtful touches and quality furnishings make this suite feel luxurious without being fussy. It's exactly the kind of space that elevates an Orlando vacation rental design from ordinary to unforgettable.

Old Hollywood With a Playful Twist

This guest suite brings the Hollywood Glam theme to life in the most delightful way. The walls are painted in Sherwin-Williams 6741 Derbyshire, a rich, moody green that feels both bold and inviting.

But it's the artwork that really steals the show. Fun pop art portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn—each blowing a bubble like they're chewing bubblegum—add a cheeky, unexpected twist to these timeless icons. It's playful, it's stylish, and it's the kind of detail that makes guests smile every time they walk in.

The Kids' Retreat: Adventure Awaits

The little guests get their own taste of Hollywood magic—starting with a Jaws-themed bedroom that's equal parts thrilling and fun. The room channels those classic summer blockbuster vibes with a nautical twist, complete with an Amity Island poster that fans will instantly recognize.

The star of the room? Boat-shaped beds with oars mounted on the sides, ready to set sail into dreamland. It's imaginative, playful, and exactly the kind of detail that makes kids excited about bedtime—a vacation rental miracle if there ever was one.

And here's where smart design meets Hollywood fun: a murphy bed tucks neatly into the wall, giving kids extra play space during the day and additional sleeping room when needed. It's a practical solution that keeps the room feeling open and versatile without sacrificing an ounce of adventure.

Steal the Look: Create Your Own Hollywood Glam Moment

Love the Hollywood Glam aesthetic? Here's a designer tip you can try at home.

In the main living area, we created a stunning focal point above a console piece using a simple but effective trick. Instead of hanging a single mirror or piece of art, I had a carpenter build two long rectangular frames on either side of the central artwork. Inside each frame, I placed decorative mirrors I found on Wayfair—an affordable way to add instant glamour and dimension to the wall.

Not a mirror person? Try filling the frames with a bold wallpaper instead. The bordered effect creates architecture and visual interest where there was none, turning an ordinary wall into something truly custom.

We are halfway through this year's Orlando Festival of Trees, and I have to tell you – even after more than a decade of participating, I still get butterflies when I start planning my tree design! There's something magical about being part of this incredible event at the Orlando Museum of Art, and I'm thrilled to share a peek behind the process with you.

What Makes Orlando Festival of Trees Special

If you haven't experienced Festival of Trees yet, you're missing out on one of Central Florida's most beloved holiday traditions! Each year, Council 101 sponsors this spectacular fundraiser for the Orlando Museum of Art, inviting 50 designers to transform Christmas trees into works of art. Walking through the museum and seeing all these uniquely decorated trees – each one telling its own story – is truly breathtaking. And knowing that it's all supporting our wonderful local museum? That makes it even more meaningful.

A Decade of Holiday Design Magic

This marks my 10+ year of decorating for Festival of Trees, and honestly, it never gets old! Each year brings a new challenge, a fresh theme to explore, and the chance to push my creative boundaries. I've done elegant, whimsical, traditional, and even some unexpected themes over the years. The beauty of this event is that it allows designers like me to really showcase our artistic vision without the usual practical constraints we work within for clients' homes.

The Design Process for Festival of Trees

People always ask me how I approach designing for this event, and the truth is, it starts months in advance! I sketch ideas, gather inspiration, and think about what story I want to tell. Unlike decorating a tree in someone's home where we consider their existing décor and personal style, this tree is pure creative expression. I source unique ornaments, sometimes custom-create elements, and think about every angle since people will be viewing the tree from all sides as they walk through the museum.

Like most years, the seed for this year's tree began in July when I visited Atlanta to make a trip to "The Market". The Atlanta Market is an incredible wholesale marketplace--a  designer's dream, with 500,000 square feet of showroom space dedicated to holiday and seasonal décor alone. I'm talking five entire floors (Floors 16-20 in Building 1) filled with everything from stunning ornaments and spectacular trees to gorgeous ribbons and the most realistic faux botanicals you've ever seen.

Ribbon: The Secret Backbone of Every Great Tree

Let me tell you a designer secret: ribbon is the bones of your tree! I'm absolutely obsessed with it, and here's why – good ribbon creates structure, movement, and visual flow that pulls your entire tree design together. When I'm at the Atlanta Market, I can spend hours in the ribbon showrooms because the options are endless: luxurious velvets, shimmering metallics, whimsical prints, and gorgeous wired edges that hold their shape beautifully. The way you weave ribbon through your tree branches creates that professional, polished look that makes people stop and say "wow!" It adds dimension, fills in gaps, and guides the eye through your design. Whether I'm using a single statement ribbon or layering multiple coordinating patterns, it's the foundation that everything else builds upon. Trust me – invest in quality ribbon, and your tree will go from nice to absolutely spectacular!

Getting it All Together

Once I've gotten my design down, the real treasure hunt begins – and honestly, this is one of my favorite parts! I start collecting all the pieces that will bring my vision to life, and let me tell you, this year's tree wasn't just a tree. I created an entire vignette scene complete with a fireplace mantle, a beautiful rug, and the coziest chair you've ever seen. Picture it: a complete little holiday moment that tells a story and makes you want to curl up with hot cocoa right there in the museum!

Now, finding that perfect fireplace mantle? That became my mission. I spent hours scrolling through Facebook Marketplace, hunting for exactly the right piece with the character and charm I envisioned. Was it a bit obsessive? Maybe. Was it totally worth it when I finally found the one? Absolutely! There's something so satisfying about sourcing unique pieces that you can't just walk into a store and buy. It adds authenticity and soul to the design – and honestly, the thrill of the hunt is half the fun of what I do!

Design Day

Then comes the fun part – loading up my car! I'm talking trunk packed to the brim, back seat filled, maybe even the passenger seat if I'm being honest. It's like Christmas morning as I carefully arrange boxes of ornaments, rolls of ribbon, and all those special pieces I've collected. The drive to the Orlando Museum of Art always feels a bit surreal – I'm equal parts excited and nervous, running through my mental checklist the whole way.

Why Community Events Matter

Being part of Orlando Festival of Trees isn't just about decorating a beautiful tree – though I won't lie, that's incredibly fun! It's about giving back to our community and supporting the arts. The Orlando Museum of Art enriches our city in so many ways, and I'm honored to contribute my skills to help raise funds for their important work. Plus, events like this bring our community together during the holidays, creating shared experiences and memories that last far beyond the season.

More Than Just Pretty Decorations

What I love about participating year after year is the connection it creates. Former clients come specifically to see my tree, new friends discover Soho Interior Design through the event, and I get to interact with people who are passionate about design and the holidays. It's also a wonderful reminder of why I fell in love with this profession – the joy of creating spaces (or in this case, trees!) that move people and bring beauty into the world.
