We are halfway through this year's Orlando Festival of Trees, and I have to tell you – even after more than a decade of participating, I still get butterflies when I start planning my tree design! There's something magical about being part of this incredible event at the Orlando Museum of Art, and I'm thrilled to share a peek behind the process with you.

What Makes Orlando Festival of Trees Special

If you haven't experienced Festival of Trees yet, you're missing out on one of Central Florida's most beloved holiday traditions! Each year, Council 101 sponsors this spectacular fundraiser for the Orlando Museum of Art, inviting 50 designers to transform Christmas trees into works of art. Walking through the museum and seeing all these uniquely decorated trees – each one telling its own story – is truly breathtaking. And knowing that it's all supporting our wonderful local museum? That makes it even more meaningful.

A Decade of Holiday Design Magic

This marks my 10+ year of decorating for Festival of Trees, and honestly, it never gets old! Each year brings a new challenge, a fresh theme to explore, and the chance to push my creative boundaries. I've done elegant, whimsical, traditional, and even some unexpected themes over the years. The beauty of this event is that it allows designers like me to really showcase our artistic vision without the usual practical constraints we work within for clients' homes.

The Design Process for Festival of Trees

People always ask me how I approach designing for this event, and the truth is, it starts months in advance! I sketch ideas, gather inspiration, and think about what story I want to tell. Unlike decorating a tree in someone's home where we consider their existing décor and personal style, this tree is pure creative expression. I source unique ornaments, sometimes custom-create elements, and think about every angle since people will be viewing the tree from all sides as they walk through the museum.

Like most years, the seed for this year's tree began in July when I visited Atlanta to make a trip to "The Market". The Atlanta Market is an incredible wholesale marketplace--a  designer's dream, with 500,000 square feet of showroom space dedicated to holiday and seasonal décor alone. I'm talking five entire floors (Floors 16-20 in Building 1) filled with everything from stunning ornaments and spectacular trees to gorgeous ribbons and the most realistic faux botanicals you've ever seen.

Ribbon: The Secret Backbone of Every Great Tree

Let me tell you a designer secret: ribbon is the bones of your tree! I'm absolutely obsessed with it, and here's why – good ribbon creates structure, movement, and visual flow that pulls your entire tree design together. When I'm at the Atlanta Market, I can spend hours in the ribbon showrooms because the options are endless: luxurious velvets, shimmering metallics, whimsical prints, and gorgeous wired edges that hold their shape beautifully. The way you weave ribbon through your tree branches creates that professional, polished look that makes people stop and say "wow!" It adds dimension, fills in gaps, and guides the eye through your design. Whether I'm using a single statement ribbon or layering multiple coordinating patterns, it's the foundation that everything else builds upon. Trust me – invest in quality ribbon, and your tree will go from nice to absolutely spectacular!

Getting it All Together

Once I've gotten my design down, the real treasure hunt begins – and honestly, this is one of my favorite parts! I start collecting all the pieces that will bring my vision to life, and let me tell you, this year's tree wasn't just a tree. I created an entire vignette scene complete with a fireplace mantle, a beautiful rug, and the coziest chair you've ever seen. Picture it: a complete little holiday moment that tells a story and makes you want to curl up with hot cocoa right there in the museum!

Now, finding that perfect fireplace mantle? That became my mission. I spent hours scrolling through Facebook Marketplace, hunting for exactly the right piece with the character and charm I envisioned. Was it a bit obsessive? Maybe. Was it totally worth it when I finally found the one? Absolutely! There's something so satisfying about sourcing unique pieces that you can't just walk into a store and buy. It adds authenticity and soul to the design – and honestly, the thrill of the hunt is half the fun of what I do!

Design Day

Then comes the fun part – loading up my car! I'm talking trunk packed to the brim, back seat filled, maybe even the passenger seat if I'm being honest. It's like Christmas morning as I carefully arrange boxes of ornaments, rolls of ribbon, and all those special pieces I've collected. The drive to the Orlando Museum of Art always feels a bit surreal – I'm equal parts excited and nervous, running through my mental checklist the whole way.

Why Community Events Matter

Being part of Orlando Festival of Trees isn't just about decorating a beautiful tree – though I won't lie, that's incredibly fun! It's about giving back to our community and supporting the arts. The Orlando Museum of Art enriches our city in so many ways, and I'm honored to contribute my skills to help raise funds for their important work. Plus, events like this bring our community together during the holidays, creating shared experiences and memories that last far beyond the season.

More Than Just Pretty Decorations

What I love about participating year after year is the connection it creates. The holidays are almost here, and you know what that means – it's time to gather around the table with the people we love! Creating beautiful holiday tablescapes doesn't have to be complicated or stressful. In fact, some of my favorite tables are the ones that feel warm and inviting rather than overly fussy. Let me share some of my go-to tips for setting a table that'll have your guests talking (in the best way!) long after dessert.

Start with a Strong Foundation

Before you bring out the fancy china, think about your base layers. A beautiful tablecloth or runner sets the tone for everything else. I love using rich, textured fabrics during the holidays – think velvet, linen, or even a subtle metallic weave. Don't be afraid to layer! A runner over a tablecloth adds depth and interest without overwhelming your table. And other times, a simple runner looks best - no tablecloth needed! It's all a matter of personal choice. 

Layer Your Holiday Tablescapes for Visual Interest

Here's where the magic happens. Layering is the secret to creating tables that look professionally designed. Start with your chargers, add dinner plates, then salad plates. Mix metals and textures – a brass charger with white china and a linen napkin creates that perfect balance of elegant and approachable. And please, don't stress about everything matching perfectly! Some of the most beautiful tables I've designed mix patterns and pieces with intention. And don't be afraid to think outside the box. The color box, that is. Red, green, and gold aren't the only colors you can use around the holiday. You can go light and bright, or dark and moody. It's up to you! 

Light It Up

Lighting transforms everything, and your holiday table is no exception. Candles are my absolute favorite – they create an instant sense of warmth and intimacy. Vary the heights with taper candles, votives, and pillars. Just remember to keep them unscented if you're serving food (you want to smell that delicious meal, not competing fragrances!). String lights woven through a greenery garland can add a subtle sparkle that feels magical without being over the top.

Create a Show-Stopping Centerpiece

Your centerpiece should be beautiful but not so tall that guests can't see each other across the table. I love using natural elements this time of year – fresh greenery, pinecones, seasonal fruits like pomegranates or pears, and even vegetables like mini pumpkins or artichokes. Keep it low and lush, or go for multiple smaller arrangements down the length of your table. Fresh flowers are always gorgeous, but don't overlook the beauty of simple eucalyptus or magnolia branches.

The Power of Personal Touches

This is where you make your table uniquely yours! Place cards show thoughtfulness and help with seating arrangements. I love adding a small favor at each place setting – maybe a sprig of rosemary tied with ribbon, a handwritten note of gratitude, or even a small ornament guests can take home. These little details show your guests how much you care and create those memorable moments we all cherish.

Don't Forget the Details

Beautiful napkins (cloth, please – it's worth the extra laundry!), polished silverware, and sparkling glassware make all the difference. If you're serving wine, make sure you have the right glasses. And here's a practical tip: set your table the day before if you can. It's one less thing to worry about on the big day, and you can adjust anything that doesn't look quite right.

Make It Your Own

The most important thing about creating holiday tablescapes? They should reflect your personal style and make you happy! Whether you love traditional reds and greens, prefer a modern all-white palette, or want to incorporate family heirlooms, let your personality shine through. Your guests aren't coming for a museum exhibit – they're coming to spend time with you.

Remember, the most beautiful table is one where everyone feels welcome and comfortable. So yes, make it lovely, but don't forget to actually enjoy the gathering yourself. After all, that's what the holidays are really about – connection, gratitude, and making memories around the table with the people who matter most.

My husband would smile and nod. Friends would change the subject. Even my design colleagues, who you'd think would understand, would give me that look—the one that says, "Carmen, it's a seventeen-hour drive to look at throw pillows." I would roll my eyes. Details.

But here's the thing about dreams, even seemingly small ones: they matter. And sometimes, the universe conspires in the most delightful ways to make them happen.

When Stars (and Nieces) Align

Enter my talented niece, Megan, who decided to move to Temple, Texas—just 60 minutes from Waco. And not only did she move there, but she landed a role in her community theater's production of "Legally Blonde." Suddenly, I had the golden ticket: a legitimate reason to book that flight that no one could question. My sister (Megan's mom) and I were on our way!

"I'm going to support family," I announced, perhaps a bit too triumphantly.

"And visit Magnolia Market?" my husband asked, knowing me far too well.

"Well, since we'll be in the area..." I tried to sound casual. I don't think I fooled anyone.

The Anticipation Was Real

In the weeks leading up to the trip, I felt like a kid counting down to Christmas. I watched old Fixer Upper episodes. I made mental lists of what I wanted to see. My family teased me mercilessly, but I didn't care. Sometimes you need to let yourself be excited about something, even if others don't quite get it.

And here's what I realized during those weeks of anticipation: this wasn't really about throw pillows or shiplap (though I do love both). It was about honoring something that has inspired me throughout my career. Chip and Joanna's approach to design at Magnolia Market Waco—that beautiful blend of warmth, practicality, and timeless style—has influenced how I think about creating spaces for my own clients here in Orlando.

Stepping Into Magnolia Market 

The morning we drove to Waco, I was as excited as a little kid. The day was a warm 80 degrees and the sky was a clear Texas blue. The Gators were playing the University of Texas Longhorns that day (back in Gainesville) and I was a little worried I might run into some overzealous Longhorn fans, but the funny thing is we kept running into Texas A&M fans, who, when they discovered I was a UF Gator fan, would smile and cheer me on. "I hope you beat those Longhorns!" they said. And guess WHAT? We did! (Go Gators!)

Walking onto the Magnolia Market grounds was like stepping into a beautifully curated dream. The silos stood tall and proud, the green space was inviting, and everywhere I looked, there were thoughtful design details. It wasn't just a store—it was an experience, a testament to what happens when people pour their hearts into creating something meaningful.

The Gardens at the Magnolia Market

The garden area itself was absolutely breathtaking—a lush sanctuary filled with fragrant herbs and vibrant flowers that seemed to dance in the Texas breeze. Thoughtfully placed seating areas invited visitors to pause and simply soak in the beauty, and I took full advantage, sitting for a moment to appreciate the intentional design of it all. There's a small garden shop tucked into this space, and while it was closed during my visit (they were preparing for a flower pressing class), I found myself wishing I could have participated. Of course, the class was already full—apparently I'm not the only one drawn to these hands-on creative experiences. Next time, I'm booking ahead.

My only regret about the garden was that I didn't take more pictures!

The Magnolia Market (the shop!)

I found myself taking mental notes, not to copy, but to be inspired. The way they used vintage pieces alongside new items. How they created cozy vignettes that made you want to recreate them in your own home. The attention to texture and how different materials played together. These weren't new concepts to me as a designer, but seeing them executed with such intention and joy was like getting a masterclass.

Fun Times at the Magnolia Market

Besides shopping and gawking at all the gorgeous vignettes and outdoor spaces, there is also food! A bevy of food trucks circles the perimeter of the large square green space where families sit around, eating, lounging, and letting the kiddos run around. I can only imagine how beautiful this space must look when it's decked out for the holidays.

One food truck was dedicated strictly to Sweet Tea (a Texas staple!). There was a variety of cold tea available and my sister partook of the Southern Sweet Tea and proclaimed it delicious. 

And last but not least, there was a bakery!

We spotted the bakery on our way into the Magnolia Mart main area, but we decided to leave it for last. Of course, when we hit the bakery, the line was curled around the building, but we were not deterred! Good thing too. The wait was absolutely worth it. We got a cupcake box (the 4 pack). Our eyes landed on the 6-pack, but I'm glad we ended up with four because just like everything else in Texas, these cupcakes were BIG. Each cupcake could have produced 3 servings!

What I'm Bringing Home

Beyond the adorable tote bag and T-shirts, I'm bringing home something more valuable: renewed inspiration and a reminder to never dismiss the dreams that light us up, even if they seem silly to others.

Visiting Magnolia Market in Waco reminded me that staying inspired is essential to doing good work. When I feed my creative souls—whether that's visiting a design destination, touring homes, exploring antique markets, or simply trying a new color palette—I have more to give to my clients and more joy to bring to my own spaces.

The Universal Truth

Here's what I want you to take from my years-long quest to visit Waco: whatever inspires you, pursue it. If there's a design show that makes your heart sing, watch it without apology. If there's a store, a city, a designer's work that captivates you, find a way to experience it. Your passion for beauty and design is not frivolous—it's what makes you good at creating beautiful, functional spaces for yourself and others.

And if people think you're a little obsessed? Well, passion often looks like obsession to those who don't share it. But passion is what drives us to keep learning, growing, and creating.

Oh, and About That Musical...

My niece was absolutely spectacular in "Legally Blonde," by the way. Seeing her shine on that stage was wonderful, and having her as my excuse—I mean, reason—to finally make this trip will forever make me smile.

Sometimes the universe knows exactly what it's doing when it aligns our practical responsibilities with our heart's desires. You just have to be ready to say yes to both.

There's something magical about decorating for the holidays, especially when it comes to Thanksgiving front porch decor. As someone who has helped countless clients prepare their homes for special events, I believe your home's entrance should tell a story before guests even step through the door. This year, I had the joy of helping my son Ryan and daughter-in-law Jenny transform their front porch for our annual family Thanksgiving gathering, and my granddaughter Jenna was right there beside me, learning and laughing as we worked!

The front porch is often overlooked when planning holiday décor, but it's truly your home's handshake—the first impression that welcomes family and friends. When done thoughtfully, Thanksgiving front porch decor creates an atmosphere of warmth and gratitude that extends from the curb all the way to your dining table.

Start with a Thanksgiving Front Porch Decor Foundation

The first thing I did was gather up all my supplies. It's amazing how small your car's trunk becomes when you're putting in all your decorating items!

Before adding any decorative elements, I always assess the space. At Ryan and Jenny's home, we began by giving the porch a thorough cleaning—sweeping away leaves, wiping down the front door, and ensuring the space felt fresh. Think of this as your blank canvas.

Next, consider your larger anchor pieces. Pumpkins make a beautiful anchor piece for your fall decorating. Jenna particularly loved arranging the smaller pumpkins, and her eye for balance surprised me!

Consider using pumpkins in varying sizes and colors—classic orange, of course, but also white, cream, and even some gorgeous blue-gray heirloom varieties like the ones used in the photo below. These weren't just randomly placed. These intentional groupings on either side of the door and cascading down the porch steps make for a gorgeous entrance.

Create Focal Points with Personal Touches

Don't forget the door itself! We hung two full, lush wreaths made of preserved fall leaves, berries, and small pine cones, and of course, beautiful ribbon. The wreath should be substantial enough to make an impact but not so large that it overwhelms the door. As a rule of thumb, it should cover about two-thirds of the door's width. If you have 2 doors, like Ryan and Jenny have, then each door needs its own wreath and those can be a bit smaller. Just make sure its looks balanced. 

One detail I'm particularly proud of: we used beautiful wide ribbon in rich autumn tones to create elegant bows around Ryan and Jenny's porch light fixtures. This simple touch tied the entire look together and added a refined, polished element that elevated the display from nice to truly special. The ribbon catches the light beautifully and adds movement when the breeze picks up—it's those thoughtful finishing touches that distinguish professional design from DIY.

Make It Maintainable

One practical tip I always share: choose décor that can withstand the elements. Here in Florida, we're fortunate with mild fall weather, but even so, I recommend checking your arrangements weekly, replacing any wilted mums, and ensuring pumpkins aren't showing signs of rot.

As we stepped back to admire our work on Ryan and Jenny's porch, Jenna beaming with pride beside me, I was reminded why I love what I do. Thanksgiving front porch decor isn't just about aesthetics—it's about creating a sense of welcome, warmth, and anticipation for the gathering to come. It sets the emotional tone for the entire celebration.

I have to confess something—I'm absolutely obsessed with lighting fixtures. There's no single element in interior design that can transform a space as dramatically and instantly as the right lighting. While many of my clients focus on furniture and paint colors first, I always tell them that lighting fixtures are the secret to making any room feel truly special and complete.

This obsession reached new heights during my recent vacation to Los Cabos, Mexico, where I stayed at my timeshare resort. From the moment I walked through those beautiful spaces, I found myself constantly stopping to photograph the most stunning fixtures I've ever seen. My phone is now filled with lighting inspiration that I simply had to share with you!

Why I Believe Lighting is Everything

You know how I always say that lighting fixtures are like jewelry for your home? Well, Los Cabos proved this theory beyond any doubt. Every single fixture I encountered didn't just provide light—it became the star of the room. Whether it was a hand-forged iron chandelier casting the most beautiful shadows or colorful glass pendants that made rainbows dance on the walls, each piece told its own story.

What really struck me was how these Mexican designers fearlessly embraced lighting as art. They didn't hide their fixtures or choose boring, safe options. Instead, they celebrated lighting fixtures as the focal points they deserved to be. Look closely at the stunning light fixture below. It's made of rope! This showstopper is the first thing you see when you enter the resort lobby. No matter how many times I saw it, it never failed to take my breath away!

The Magic I Discovered in Strategic Fixture Placement

One of the biggest "aha" moments of my trip was observing how expertly these spaces layered different lighting fixtures throughout each room. Instead of relying on harsh overhead lighting (which I've been preaching against for years!), they created these gorgeous, multi-dimensional lighting schemes that felt warm and inviting at any time of day.

I photographed reading nooks with the most elegant table lamps that created perfect pools of light, and dining areas where pendant lights not only illuminated the table but actually defined the entire space. 

Embracing Bold Designs (My New Favorite Thing!)

Let me tell you, the lighting fixtures I encountered in Los Cabos were anything but boring! These pieces were bold, colorful, and absolutely gorgeous. I fell in love with hand-blown glass fixtures in the most beautiful blues and warm amber tones that brought so much personality to otherwise neutral spaces.

The wrought iron pieces completely captivated me too—they had this old-world charm mixed with contemporary sophistication that I'm already dreaming about incorporating into my Orlando projects. These fixtures weren't background players; they were the stars of the show!

How I'm Bringing This Inspiration Home

I came back from Los Cabos with my creative mind buzzing with possibilities. While I'm not about to turn every project into a Mexican resort (though wouldn't that be fun?), I am definitely embracing the fearless approach to lighting design that I witnessed.

I'm already planning to be bolder with my fixture choices—thinking oversized chandeliers that make a real statement, unique table lamps that add unexpected pops of personality, and mixing metals and textures in ways I might have been more cautious about before. There's something so refreshing about stepping outside your comfort zone and seeing how other cultures approach design!

My Advice: Invest in Lighting That Moves You

Here's what I always tell my clients, and my Los Cabos experience reinforced this completely: quality lighting fixtures are one of the smartest investments you can make in your home. Unlike trends that come and go, beautiful lighting transcends time and continues to bring joy for decades.

The photographs I took during my trip serve as daily reminders that great design knows no borders. Sometimes we need to look beyond our immediate surroundings to discover what's truly possible. Those fixtures in Mexico didn't just light up rooms—they lit up my imagination!

The true genius lies in the custom-designed roller shade that covers the room's window. This thoughtful addition maintains the continuous underwater ambiance, ensuring that even natural light filters through with an oceanic glow.

The Playhouse Room: Where Little Dreams Come to Life

Every little girl has dreamed of having her own playhouse, and this room makes that fantasy a beautiful reality. This themed room goes beyond traditional bedroom design to create a genuine playhouse experience where children can actually sleep within their fairy tale.

The space captures the whimsical charm of a storybook cottage, complete with architectural details that make guests feel like they've shrunk down to dollhouse size. Soft pastels, charming details, and child-scaled furnishings combine to create an environment where imagination runs wild and bedtime becomes the highlight of the day. There’s even a slide for indoor fun!

Recreation Room: The Ultimate Family Entertainment Hub

The true showstopper in this themed room is the one-of-a-kind putt putt table—a custom creation that's sure to become the stuff of vacation legends. This innovative piece appears to be a fun pool table at first glance, but in reality is a unique miniature golf course that challenges players of all ages. It's more than just a game; it's a conversation starter, an Instagram moment, and a memory-maker all rolled into one stunning piece of functional art.
