Revitalize your outdoor space with our easy patio makeover tips for spring.

Simple Patio Makeover Tips for Spring

Now that the sun is setting later and the ideal weather is settling in, it's the perfect time for open-air cocktail parties and lazy afternoons.

But first, and being spring, you likely need to do a patio makeover to create that backyard oasis.

Not sure where to start with your patio makeover? I hear you.

Check out this handy guide, which has everything you need to know to get your outdoor space in shape in no time.

Start Your Patio Makeover with a Deep Clean

Give your deck or patio a good clean. Sweep up leaves, cobwebs, and debris with a broom that has outdoor-grade bristles, then wash away the winter with your hose.

Note: Don’t power wash stained wood — only concrete, brick and stone. (No power washer? Most big-box hardware stores allow you to rent them for the day.)

Refresh Your Outdoor Furniture

Instead of investing in new pieces, try restoring them. Hearty woods like teak and acacia are meant to survive harsh weather; however, if the woods start to turn gray and muted, give them a facelift with a fresh coat of teak cleaner.

Wash your table with soap and water, sand the gray spots and apply two coats of cleaner. Scrub pieces made of plastic or composite materials, such as Polywood and Trex, with liquid dish soap and water.

Add Color to Enhance Your Patio Makeover

Most outdoor furniture pieces come in wood styles and neutral colors, which makes for a palette that blends in well with the great outdoors.

Layering in a few pillows in bright colors and fun patterns will give your patio a fresh look.

Brighten Your Space with Rugs in Your Patio Makeover

Rugs are a fun and easy way to brighten your outdoor living space.

Rugs are an easy way to brighten your outdoor living space.

These days, stylish designs that will also hold up to outdoor living should be pretty easy to find.

Prep the Grill

Use a stiff wire brush to clean your grill’s grates before inviting the neighbors over for a backyard feast.

If you’re ready for an outdoor kitchen upgrade, let me know and I can steer you in the right direction for your outdoor cooking inspiration.

Add a Few Side Tables for Spring Sips

Freshly squeezed cocktails and chilled glasses of Sauvignon Blanc deserve to rest on a chic side table.

Consider a ceramic stool for easy maintenance and cleanup. The right color or pattern will add some pop to your patio makeover.

Create Ambiance with Lighting in Your Patio Makeover

Create ambiance for your al fresco dinners with twinkling lights. Wrap them around trees, line them along your pergola roof, or string them from tree to tree for an instant mood lifter.

Mulch and Refill Pots for a Fresh Patio Makeover Look

Late spring is the best time to mulch your planters, pots, and containers. Add a fresh layer to discourage weeds and keep your plants nicely hydrated.

Depending on where you live, flowers like pansies, marigolds, and petunias add beautiful seasonal color, while plants like cacti and succulents add texture and greenery.

Consider hanging baskets filled with hearty begonias to add dimension.

Create Seating Vignettes

Keep the conversation flowing with cozy arrangements. Arrange Adirondack loungers around a fire pit to encourage a warm chat, or take your patio to new heights by adding a whimsical hanging chair or hammock.

Throw Some Shade

Shaded spots are necessary for a respite from the Florida sun. If your deck or patio isn’t covered, add a stylish umbrella to the mix. From freestanding styles to patio tables with umbrellas, there are plenty of options.

Transforming Spaces: My Small Bathroom Makeover Success Story

Join me as I share how a small bathroom makeover brought storage and serenity to a cramped space, turning a dream into reality. (130 characters)

The Challenge of Confining Spaces

As a designer, I'm always intrigued by the challenge small spaces present. This was precisely the case when my friend Linda approached me for help with her small bathroom. The limited space and lack of storage had everything out in the open, creating a sense of clutter and disarray.

The Vision: Crafting Serenity and Storage for a Small Bathroom Makeover

In tackling this small bathroom makeover, my goal went beyond mere renovation. I aimed to create a haven for Linda, a space that was not only functional but also a reflection of her desire for a calm, monochromatic aesthetic. By designing a new vanity, we could neatly tuck away toiletries, a curling iron, and a hairdryer, instantly elevating the room's look and feel.

Maximizing Space and Light: A Key to Small Bathroom Makeover

One of Linda's favorite enhancements was the addition of a larger mirror. This choice was pivotal, making the room appear more spacious and reflecting light beautifully. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of mirrors to transform a space, a simple yet impactful decision in any small bathroom makeover.

Client Satisfaction: A Dream Fulfilled

The completion of Linda's bathroom makeover was more than a project conclusion; it was the realization of her dream. Linda's heartfelt feedback, "Carmen, I absolutely love my bathroom. Mornings, when I shower, I feel such gratitude for the beauty all around me. Aesthetically, it’s my dream come true," truly touched me. It's moments like these that remind me why I love what I do.

The Impact of Thoughtful Design

This small bathroom makeover at Pinewood Court exemplifies how thoughtful design can significantly enhance daily life. From optimizing storage to strategically using mirrors, every choice made was aimed at transforming Linda's cramped bathroom into a space of beauty and functionality.

As I reflect on this project, I'm reminded of the profound impact interior design can have on our well-being. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about creating spaces that resonate with our clients, making their dreams a tangible reality. For anyone considering a small bathroom makeover, remember that with creativity and strategic design, even the smallest spaces can be transformed into serene sanctuaries.

Christmas tree decorating at the 2023 Festival of Trees.

The 2023 Christmas Tree Decorating Lineup

The 2023 holiday season was a good one for Christmas tree decorating this year and quite the whirlwind! I've got a handful of photos to share with you of some of the decorating done for some of my holiday decorating clients.

Let's talk about holiday decorating for your own home or business (or both) for this upcoming 2024 fall holiday season. I always encourage people to book early – and even though we're at the start of the year, I can pencil you in for later this fall, so let me know if you're interested.

Below, you'll see photos from some of my Christmas decorating this season, including creations for Corcoran Premier Realty at the Festival of Trees event, Melbourne Junior League, Orlando Infiniti, the Jaguar Land Rover dealership, a private residence...and even the tear-down crew!

And just a good note on the Festival of Trees: we had a very successful event with over 13,000 attendees, 1,000 more than last year! And that is very good news because money raised from the event ultimately supports the arts and art education at the Orlando Museum of Art.

Peach Fuzz, a warm, nurturing color has been named the Pantone 2024 Color of the Year.

Pantone’s Surprising 2024 Color of the Year

Since it was first introduced in 2010, the peach emoji has come to symbolize everything from a stone fruit, a particularly taut derriere, and—of course—a booty call. In 2024, however, it will be the color on everyone’s walls, according to Pantone. Today, the global color authority named Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz as its 2024 Color of the Year (COTY).

The hue, one of more than nearly 20,000 in the company’s color library, is a blushing orange-pink. It’s a warm, comforting color that Pantone’s experts feel will epitomize the mood in the year ahead. Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, describes Peach Fuzz as “nurturing,” and “warm and welcoming.”

Pantone 2024 Color of the Year: Peach Fuzz.

Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz

An evolution in trends and global mood

“In a world that can seem very harsh, people are looking for colors that soothe, colors that are soft and warm, colors that nurture and provide us with comfort,” Eiseman says.

The announcement marks the 25th anniversary of Pantone’s annual COTY unveiling—an event that sets the standard for industries ranging from interiors to fashion to packaging design. And while Peach Fuzz may feel like a sharp turn from its showy sister, Pantone’s 2023 COTY Viva Magenta, Eiseman says next year’s choice marks an “evolution”—both of trends and the global mood.

“Viva Magenta was an animated red shade, both powerful and empowering, that encouraged experimentation and self-expression, encouraging us as we endeavored to write a new narrative for our lives,” she says. “As we move into 2024, we are seeing that at a time of turmoil in many aspects of our lives, our need for nurturing, empathy, and compassion is growing stronger, as are our imaginings and desire for a more peaceful future.”

Bedroom draperies in Peach Fuzz, the Pantone 2024 Color of the Year.

Echoes of Barbenheimer?

Pantone’s favored 2024 tint also echoes the coming year’s “Barbenheimer”-esque array of competing COTYs, which have ranged from dark, moody hues like slate and evergreen (see Behr’s Cracked Pepper) to a spectrum of optimistic blues (take Benjamin Moore’s Blue Nova and Sherwin-Williams’s appropriately named Upward). “Different companies and brands are going to want to send different messages depending upon the products they offer,” Eiseman says “There is never just one trend, and some may want to send a message of protective cover or mystery and intrigue.”

In a San Antonio house, the back bedroom wall is painted in a flattering peach plaster (much like the Pantone 2024 Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz), while the other surfaces are clad in a matching grasscloth wallcovering.

Everything's peachy!

One thing was for sure: Variations of peach popped up virtually everywhere the Pantone team looked. “We were seeing colors in the peach family…in all areas of design from clothing and color cosmetics to carpets and cars,” Eiseman explains, speaking to their research process that kicks off in May. “As we spoke with people and zeroed in on the mood and what people were looking for, we started to zone into this particular family of color.”

“We did not feel there were other color families that were strong contenders,” she adds.

Jump on the peach bandwagon

And Pantone isn’t the only company keen on peach: Benjamin Moore named Pristine, a barely there peach, among its trending array of shades, while HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams homed in on a sandy tangerine called Persimmon for next year.

A peach-kissed living room painted in Peach Fuzz, Pantone's 2024 Color of the Year.

Color experts see these hues as a new cadre of neutral—a trend paint companies and color forecasters have been predicting since the pandemic. Eiseman, for her part, thinks Peach Fuzz works perfectly as a wall color, especially in bathrooms, where, she points out, it is “very flattering to all skin tones.”

She also sees it as the ideal color for accessories, ranging from rugs to countertop kitchen appliances. “With that said, we would like designers to bring the color into their designs in a way that expresses their vision.”

The gentle blush of ceiling molding and trim in Peach Fuzz, the Pantone 2024 Color of the Year.

What do you think about this Pantone Color of the Year 2024: Peach Fuzz?

Does it feel like a warm, nurturing, comfortable color? Let me know your thoughts, especially if you’d like to explore using this color in any of your spaces, or even in fabrics – I can help you test the waters.

Cosentino’s first-ever North American trend report forecasts home design trends for the upcoming 2024 year.

Home Design Trends for 2024

Cosentino’s first-ever North American trend report forecasts home design trends for the upcoming year

Cosentino Group is a Spanish global leader in the production and distribution of innovative and sustainable surfaces for the world of architecture and design. They recently released their 2024 North American home design trends report.

Informed by an IPSOS survey, one of the largest market research companies in the world, the report includes insights from renovation-inspired homeowners, designers, and top architects, and unveils the latest trends and movements in design—including the rise of resimmercial, the “spathroom,” metallics, sustainable solutions, and more.

Cosentino also partnered with top designers Richard T. Anuszkiewicz, Laura Kirar, Barry Dixon, and Sarah Brooks Eilers to share exclusive insights that inspire consumers to try these trends in their own homes.

“At Cosentino, our focus is to create meaningful design that inspires people’s lives with products that are at the forefront of design and innovation. To achieve this, we must keep a constant pulse on trends, market shifts, and designer voices.

This report gives direct access to these valuable insights and we are proud to share them as a resource to support the design community as a whole,” says Eduardo Cosentino, executive vice president of Global Corporate Sales and CEO of Cosentino Americas.

Explore the Full Trend Report

Below are the top seven report findings, for a look at how design trends will help shape the home renovations of 2024:

1. The Rise of “Resimmercial”

In a post-pandemic world, the lines between home, work, and play are blurring further. This has led to the rise of resimmercial design across both commercial and residential spaces, giving consumers luxury, comfort, and convenience—whether at home or in a hotel room.

When asked which top three elements from a resort or hotel they’d most like to incorporate in their home, both homeowners and design professionals shared that a spa-inspired bathroom and indoor/outdoor walkout patio are the top choices. What’s more, 70% of designers look to resorts and hotels for renovation inspiration, and 58% find ideas from a specific travel destination.

At the same time, the comforts of home are also influencing the look and feel of commercial spaces, especially as more consumers take “work-cations” or look for inspiring longer-term accommodations. Specifically, homeowners and designers say they are most attracted to luxurious lounge areas or reading nooks and high-end kitchen spaces in terms of features that help them feel at home in hotel suites.

“As residential design elements integrate into commercial spaces, there’s been a trend towards more inviting and comfortable hospitality environments. For example, the use of warm and cozy textiles, open and flexible layouts that encourage interaction and relaxation, and nature-inspired elements like natural materials, which contribute to a soothing and rejuvenating ambiance.” – designer Laura Kirar

2. Transforming Bathrooms into “Spathrooms”

As more Americans prioritize health, the bathroom is moving beyond practicality and transitioning into a haven for wellness and relaxation. Enter the “spathroom”—the ultimate retreat. In fact, 69% of designers and 53% of homeowners reported a spa-inspired bathroom as the number one hotel design element they’d like to see in their own home. To get the look, both designers and homeowners said they would incorporate large tile/stone slabs (46% designers, 42% homeowners), a high-end vanity (45% designers, 39% homeowners), an oversize bathtub (41% of designers, 39% of homeowners) and luxury flooring (37% designers, 35% homeowners) to create a spathroom.

Design expert Sarah Eilers of Lucas/Eilers Design Associates weighs in further, noting “Every spa-inspired bathroom needs exquisite stone slabs, an oversized bathtub, and a high-end vanity. The cornerstone of a spa-worthy bathroom is a soothing color palette. Think soft, muted colors like pale blues, greens, beige, and pastel shades. These colors create a serene and calming atmosphere that mimics the tranquility of a spa.”

“From countertops to flooring, shower walls and trays, sinks, custom furniture, and more, there are endless possibilities to use surfacing to elevate the bathroom,” said Elizabeth Ramos, marketing director for Cosentino Americas. “C-Bath is Cosentino’s comprehensive approach to reimagining the bath space through design and technology offering our full product offering and inspirational project imagery.”

2024 home design trends show more Americans are transforming bathrooms into “spathrooms”, where your bathroom is like a spa.

3. Kitchens are King in 2024 Design Trends

It’s no secret the kitchen is the heart of the home—and designers and homeowners agree that it’s their number one renovation priority. As kitchens continue to be a hub for dining, entertaining and relaxing, a personalized, functional “dream kitchen” is more important than ever. In fact, nearly one-quarter of the total home design budget is dedicated to kitchen updates.

Meanwhile, integrated outdoor kitchens are still a favorite design element, with more than 83% of designers and 70% of homeowners citing it as a top focus area for their outdoor space. Luckily for homeowners, scratch and UV-resistant surfaces like Dekton can make any kitchen – indoor or out – a space that is both stylish and functional.

“Our clients believe quality will stand the test of time. We are seeing more high-end appliances and cabinets than ever before – as well as multiple sinks, a special “trophy” range, lots of counter space and hidden appliances.” – designer Barry Dixon

In 2024 design trends, kitchens are king and the number one renovation priority among homeowners and designers.

4. Metallics Are Making A Statement in 2024

From countertops to showers and fixtures to textiles, metallics add a touch of elegance and glamor to any space. For many, it’s the perfect way to add a personal touch.

This year, the gilded look will continue to influence design elements. In fact, designers selected metallic accents as their top up-and-coming trend, while homeowners rated it as number two. When it comes to how they’re being used, nearly 80% of designers say they would incorporate metallic accents in their shower projects, followed by cladding, fireplaces, and kitchen countertops.

For effortless expression, Cosentino’s latest Silestone introduction—Le Chic—features eye-catching veining and metallic accents, including both silver and gold tones. These diverse colorways can easily be used to create a variety of statement looks, from contemporary to traditional spaces.

“I use metal and metallics to make spaces feel more glamorous and luxurious. When you subtly balance these elements in, it can deliver high impact and allow the space to truly shine. The Le Chic collection with Silestone is a perfect balance for a striking accent.” – designer Richard T. Anuszkiewicz

5. Sustainability in Design is a Mainstay Trending for 2024

Environmental impact continues to be a top priority for discerning homeowners and designers—whether using sustainable products, environmentally friendly practices, or long-lasting materials that don’t need to be replaced as often. In fact, 84% of designers prioritize products made with responsibly sourced materials, while more than 70% of Millennials and Gen Z value products made with minimal to zero water waste or responsibly sourced materials, respectively.

“The industry shift towards sustainability is a huge priority for future generations, and we have to work together to make it happen. For us, sustainability is not just about the materials we use or the way we produce our products, it’s about considering the entire lifecycle of our products and maintaining a business model that supports innovation and environmentally safe practices.” – Eduardo Cosentino, EVP Global Corporate Sales and CEO of Cosentino Americas

When it comes to environmentally-conscious materials, Dekton offers a functional yet sustainable solution as a carbon-neutral surface product made of raw materials, while Cosentino’s Silestone with HybriQ® Technology introduces a new product category of mineral hybrid surface made with 99% recycled water, 100% renewable energy, and a minimum of 20% recycled materials, ensuring environmental conservation without sacrificing style.

Environmental impact continues to be a top priority for discerning homeowners and designers in 2024 home design trends.

6. Earth Tones are In, Rustic is Out, and Retro is… Polarizing

Designs are always changing, but one thing’s for sure—earth tones and neutral palettes are the in-style trend for both homeowners (56%) and designers (72%). Interestingly enough, 70s-inspired design is the most polarizing. Designer opinions conflicted, with respondents selecting it as both an up-and-coming and an out-of-style trend.

One thing everyone can agree on? That rustic and modern farmhouse looks are going out of style.

In 2024 home design trends, earth tones and neutral palettes are the in-style trend for both homeowners and designers.

7. Luxury—Inside and Out—is a Big Design Trend in 2024

Americans continue to look for ways to transform their outdoor spaces. In fact, designers and homeowners are investing in upgrades like fire features and outdoor bars & entertaining spaces (90% of designers, 74% of homeowners). Beyond these upgrades, designers are also focusing on outdoor kitchens, pools and plunge pools to create a backyard oasis.

“We’ve seen a growing number of homeowners seeking surfaces that can withstand outdoor elements, while providing an elevated, cohesive look to their interior design choices. Dekton is excellent for outdoor use due to its resistance to UV rays and thermal shock. It can be used for pavers, facades, patios, firepits, pools and more, leaving homeowners with endless design options for all of their outdoor projects.” – Elizabeth Ramos, Marketing Director, Cosentino Americas

Secret ingredients for a great kitchen.

Secret Ingredients For a Great Kitchen

These tips will help you make your kitchen space feel brighter and bigger, with more visual “openness.”

The kitchen is usually the most popular gathering spot in a home. Whether it’s a family meal at the table, friends gathered around the island during a party, or preparing a quick snack using the countertops, scoop up these ideas to maximize the look and function of this busy space.

Low Contrast, High Impact

Kitchen style - minimal contrast between cabinets and countertops.

White is king when it comes to creating the illusion of space. However, if the thought of this light hue makes you uneasy, opt for a monochromatic color scheme with hues from the same color value to achieve the desired result. For example, a soft tan cabinet color paired with an ivory countertop creates the illusion of space with built-in camouflage. By eliminating the sudden shift from dark to light in a space, you’ll instantly make the room seem larger and brighter.

Open the Cabinetry

Kitchen style - open cabinetry at the top.

Cabinetry is a major focal point in the kitchen and dark cabinets in particular can take up a lot of visual space. Adding glass fronts to your upper cabinets adds transparency and lightness. Adding glass fronts to your upper cabinetry also allows you to see through the cabinet. And, as a bonus, it’s a great way to display attractive dinnerware without losing valuable storage space. Another idea is to forego ornate raised door panels, and instead, select a simple flat-panel door. Leaving off the hardware will also trick the eye into thinking the kitchen is roomier.

Let There Be Light

Kitchen style - the right lighting opens up a space.

Don’t forget about the importance of great lighting. While a dark space will visually shrink a space, a room with both natural and well-placed recessed lighting or fixtures will go a long way to set the mood. Don’t forget to shed light on areas such as the island with pendant lighting. Adding lighting under, above, and inside the cabinets will work wonders to make the room feel brighter and bigger.

Back (splash) to Basics

Secret ingredients for a great kitchen.

Forget about selecting a tile for your backsplash in a show-stopping color. Instead, choose a tile color that blends in with the wall color to instantly make the walls taller. Another way to put your backsplash to work for you is by utilizing glass or mirror mosaic tile or stainless steel, which will reflect the light and add depth and a subtle sheen.

Magic of Flooring

Kitchen style - larger flooring planks opens up a space.

The foundation of any space is the flooring and the kitchen is no exception. Instead of the standard 12-inch tile, install larger, 18- or 24-inch tile on the diagonal for a more fluid and airier appearance with fewer grout lines. You’ll also create the illusion of a wider space with flooring in three-inch or wider planks – not narrower strips that tend to look busier and smaller. Whether your taste is actual wood flooring, the new tile that looks like wood, or a stylish laminate, you’ll create the illusion of a wider floor space by running the planks parallel along the longest wall in your room.

Make your heart of the home a place that is everything you need – and want – so you can cook up a space where you’ll enjoy many meals and memories!

If any of these kitchen enhancement ideas have you looking around at your own kitchen, and you feel that an update is in order, let me know, and I can come by and review it and discuss possibilities. Kitchen upgrades always make my clients happy, and there are unlimited possibilities, so let’s talk about it.
