Quick, look at the window closest to you. What do you see? Maybe it's a set of builder-grade blinds that came with the house. Maybe it's a curtain rod that's been hanging a little crooked since 2015. Or maybe, if you're honest, it's nothing at all. Most of us spend weeks choosing a sofa and agonize over paint colors, but window treatments are often an afterthought, something we'll "get to eventually."

Here's what I've learned after years of designing homes: windows are one of the first things your eye goes to when you walk into a room. When they're dressed well, the whole room feels finished. When they're not, even a beautiful space can feel like something is missing.

Last month I spent two days at an immersive workshop hosted by Norman, one of the window treatment brands I'm proud to represent. I came home inspired, with a notebook full of ideas and a fresh reminder of how much the right window treatments can transform a home. So this month, I'm sharing some of my favorite insights, designer tricks, and the mistakes I see most often, so you can make choices you'll love for years.

First, Ask What Your Windows Need to Do

Before you think about colors, fabrics, or styles, ask yourself one simple question: what job does this window need to do?

Every window in your home has a different job. Your bedroom windows may need to block light completely so you can sleep past sunrise. Your living room windows may need to soften harsh afternoon glare while keeping your view of the backyard. Your front windows may need privacy from the street without making the room feel dark. And your home office may need glare control so you can actually see your computer screen at 3 p.m.

Once you know what each window needs to do, choosing a style becomes much easier, and you avoid the most common and costly mistake: buying something beautiful that doesn't actually work for the room.

Quick Quiz: Are Your Windows Working for You?

Answer yes or no:

  • Do you close the blinds in the afternoon just to watch TV?
  • Has your hardwood floor or sofa faded in one spot?
  • Do you feel like neighbors can see in at night?
  • Is there a window you avoid opening because it's hard to reach?
  • Do your window treatments look the same as the day you moved in, because they came with the house?
  • Does one room always feel hotter than the rest?

If you answered yes to two or more, your windows are working harder against you than for you. The good news? That's very easy to fix.

Don't Fall in Love with a Photo (at Least Not Yet)

We've all been there. You're scrolling Instagram or flipping through a magazine, and there it is: the perfect room, with soft linen shades glowing in golden afternoon light. You save the photo, order something similar, and when it's installed... it just doesn't look the same.

That's because those photos are carefully staged. The lighting is perfect, the angle is chosen for maximum drama, and every piece of furniture and accessory is styled to pull the look together. Your room has its own light, its own colors, and its own personality, and the same shade can look completely different there.

Inspiration photos are a wonderful starting point. I love when clients bring them to me! But the best results come from designing for your space, not recreating someone else's.

Five Mistakes I See All the Time

1. Hanging curtain rods too low. This is the number one mistake I see. When the rod sits right on top of the window frame, it makes the ceiling feel lower and the window look smaller.

2. Drapes that are too short. Drapery panels that stop above the floor look like pants that are too short. In most rooms, panels should just kiss the floor or break slightly onto it.

3. Skimpy panels. Panels that barely cover the window when closed look thin and unfinished. Fullness is what makes drapery look luxurious.

4. Choosing style before function. A gorgeous sheer shade won't help much in a bedroom where you need darkness to sleep.

5. Guessing on measurements. An inside mount versus an outside mount, a quarter inch here or there: small measuring mistakes can lead to light gaps, shades that won't operate correctly, or treatments that simply don't fit. This is where professional measuring pays for itself.

Designer Tricks to Make Windows Look Bigger

Want a quick way to make a room feel taller, larger, and more polished? Try these tricks I use all the time:

Go high. Mount curtain rods or cornices several inches above the window frame, closer to the ceiling. It draws the eye up and makes the ceiling feel higher.

Go wide. Extend the rod beyond the window frame on each side, so the panels rest mostly on the wall when open. More glass shows, more light comes in, and the window looks bigger.

Layer it. Pair a functional shade with stationary drapery side panels. The shade handles light and privacy, and the panels add softness, height, color, and texture. Layering is one of the easiest ways to make a room feel designed rather than decorated.

Match your mounts. When windows in the same room are different heights, a valance or cornice at a consistent height can make them feel uniform and intentional.

Living in the Sunshine State

Florida sunshine is one of the best parts of living here, but it's tough on our homes. UV rays fade hardwood floors, rugs, furniture, and artwork faster than most people realize. That faded spot on your sofa? The sun did that. Afternoon heat can make west-facing rooms uncomfortable and drive up your energy bills.

The right window treatments can help in a big way. Solar shades reduce glare and filter UV rays while preserving your view, so they're perfect for rooms where you don't want to give up the scenery. Cellular (honeycomb) shades trap air in their pockets, which makes them one of the best choices for insulation and energy savings. Shutters bring timeless style, control light beautifully, and add value to your home. And for patios and lanais, outdoor shades can turn a space that's too hot to use into one you'll enjoy all year.

What I'm Loving Right Now

Window treatments have come a long way, and I'm excited about where they're headed:

Natural textures. Woven wood shades made from reeds, grasses, and bamboo bring warmth and character to any room, and they work in homes ranging from coastal to modern.

Warm, soft neutrals. Stark white is giving way to creamy whites, warm taupes, soft greiges, and linen-like textures that make rooms feel inviting.

Motorization. Motorized shades used to feel like a luxury, but today's systems are quiet, easy to use, and more affordable than ever. Imagine your shades opening gently at sunrise and closing at sunset, all on their own, or closing every shade in the house with a single voice command. They're also a game changer for tall or hard-to-reach windows.

Cordless everything. Cordless and motorized options have a cleaner look, and they're much safer for homes with young children and pets.

Window treatments natural textures

One of my favorite trends right now: natural woven jute that turns sunlight into a soft, golden glow.

cordless window treatments

No cords, no worries. Cordless shades are a smart choice for homes with little ones and pets, and they look gorgeous too.

Want taller ceilings without construction? Hang your curtains high, like these warm neutral panels, and let the eye travel up.

motorized blinds

Hard-to-reach windows? Motorized shades take care of them with the touch of a button.
