Valances and cornices are “top treatments” that perfectly complete most any window treatment.
Valances and cornices are utilized to “top off” your window treatments. They frequently employ a custom fabric accent that sits at the top of the window. Valances can look casual or formal, depending on the fabric used, and typically will match or complement your window treatment and the decor of your room. Cornices are typically a bit more formal, being made of rigid materials. A simple “box” style cornice, if done right, can add a sophisticated finishing touch to a very modern window treatment approach. Besides adding visual interest to the window valances and cornices also serve the purpose of hiding hardware and make for a cleaner look at the window.
Valances and cornices fall into the category of “top treatments” and offer endless possibilities. Used on their own, or over another window covering, top treatments offer both decorative and functional advantages: they can make a window seem larger than it really is, hide wall imperfections, or tie in architectural elements seamlessly.
The primary difference between a curtain valance and a cornice is that valances are made out of drapery or fabric, while cornices are typically made out of wood (but are often upholstered to the board shape of the rigid cornice). Valances also add a softer accent toa room.
Valances
Whether they highlight the distinctive beauty of wood or are covered to coordinate with your window treatment fabric, valances add a bold design element while concealing headrails and hardware.
Cornices
Available in a range of sizes, fabrics, and wood finishes, cornices make a dramatic statement atop your windows and complement the full range of other window treatments.
Swags and Cascades
Looking for a bit more flow? Swags and cascades add gentle dimension with folds of fabric along the tops and sides of your window treatment for a softer, waterfall-like feel.
Palladian Shelf
Does your window have an arch or other specialty shape? A specially designed, wood palladian shelf allows blinds and shades to be easily mounted underneath your window’s beautiful curve and acts as a visual separator between the arch or shape and the rest of the window.
In other instances, valances are a standalone window treatment idea where floor-length draperies are impractical. They cover only the top portion of a window and generally measure about 18 inches in height. They are made of fabric and available in countless styles. They can be mounted on boards, rods, or poles and may be used with or without drapery panels. There are many different kinds of valance options that can involve a fusion of existing treatments, custom designs, or a creation of your own. The shape and style of window, along with a budget, will help you determine the scope of the project.
A pleated fabric valance finishes off a natural shade treatment.
Cornice box forms add a stylish finishing touch to modern draperies.
Roman-style fabric valance.
A palladian shelf creates a formal “top off” separation between an arched window section and the rectangular window that will receive the window treatment.

“My 9-Step Process and Guarantee is Why I Know You'll Love Working with Me!”
Here’s a simple step-by-step process of how we’ll work together and what to expect:
We’ll start with a phone conversation to get acquainted and I can learn about your project. We’ll discuss you and your family’s lifestyle. And I’ll have you describe your home and current interior styling and colors.
I’ll ask if you’ve seen and liked any specific window treatment styles on TV, in magazines, online, or at a friend’s home. Knowing all of this helps me prepare and present the right options for our first meeting.
I’ll also ask if you have a budget in mind? This is very important and it helps me to determine the framework for my design expertise as it applies to your situation. It’s important to me to not waste your time and disappoint you. For example, if you want seven double sets of plantation shutters and your budget is $2,000, I can tell you upfront, that it’s not possible. But with that information, I can show you all the beautiful ways a $2,000 budget will also achieve your goals.
At the end of our initial phone conversation, I’ll schedule a meeting with you to present product suggestions and take rough measurements of the areas you want window treatments for.
Within 24-hours of our meeting, I’ll prepare a proposal for you to review and approve.
If you decide to move forward, I’ll need to collect a 50% deposit. I accept all major credit cards. And I can even offer 0% financing!
I’ll schedule a second visit to have my installer come to your home or business to take precise measurements. He will analyze the walls and surfaces to determine the best approach for your installation.
Once final measurements are taken, I’ll prepare a factory order and will request payment for the balance. I’ll also give you an estimated installation date.
We will do a seamless and professional installation with full clean-up – afterward, you won’t even know we were there! All you’ll need to do is enjoy the beauty of your spectacular new window treatments!
