These 7 Colors Will Be Everywhere in 2023

These 7 Colors Will Be Everywhere in 2023

Buckle up for a rainbow renaissance.

“There isn’t a shade or color I’ve ever seen that I haven’t liked,” Mario Buatta, with characteristic wit, observed. The late great decorator, who passed away in 2018, would be pleased, then, to see the spectrum of shades and tints that are poised to dominate our homes in the year ahead. Gone are the days of straight-laced, all-white rooms; instead, as we emerge from three (have I got that right?) years of uncertainty, experts predict a rainbow-bright renaissance in 2023 colors.

“The colors [consumers] choose are reflecting their mood—and they are much freer in how, when, and where they use it on themselves and in their homes,” Gemma Riberti, head of interiors at the trend forecasting agency WGSN, tells us. “Going into 2023, color is reflecting well-being, discovery, acceptance, transformation, comfort, simplicity, and (why not) pleasure.”

While some of these observations might sound like sound bites from your last therapy session, the “It” hues I’ve seen come to the fore these last few years show a collective desire for coziness and a closeness to nature (read: green-everything) and more expressive materials (see one of the year’s biggest trends, bold marble). “One of the most significant themes we’ve identified for the 2023 colors is warmth,” Sherwin-Williams’s Sue Wadden affirms. “People are moving away from the cool grays that defined the past decade and exploring hues that exude kindness, serenity, and empathy.”

There were also some surprises in the mix, according to the color experts we spoke to, namely the emergence of a genre of, literally, out-of-this-world colors: “Near-neons and hyper-brights are also making a comeback, driven by the metaverse, with colors making an impact in both digital and physical realms,” Ribaldi says. That entails vivid, bold hues—especially as Gen Zers begin decorating their first homes.

But if you aren’t entirely ready to paint your bedroom acid green just yet, read on for a list of the seven color trends that will be all the rage in 2023.

Green: Sage is giving way to deeper emerald green in 2023 colors.

Green is a hot 2023 color!

The color experts have said it before and they’re saying it again: Green shows no sign of fading in our homes, and it’s a surefire bet—whether you opt for a soothing sage or a pale pistachio—the hue will remain in fashion for years to come. “We’ve definitely seen an increased interest in greens this year, with that shade representing three of our top six colorways for 2022,” says Natalie Ebel, copresident of direct-to-consumer paint brand Backdrop. But while last year paint companies were predicting dusty verdant variations (for instance, Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Color of the Year, October Mist), Ebel, along with many other experts, predicted an uptick in punchier, truer greens and emeralds.

What makes green, well, evergreen? International color expert and executive director at Pantone’s Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman, makes the case for its beauty as a neutral. “My students hear me lecture over and over and over again about using green as a neutral color,” she says. “Mother Nature uses it ubiquitously in plants and foliage.” Watch for this hue in everything from marble to tile to furnishings in the year ahead.

Cool Lavenders and Lilacs: Lavender and lilac hues are rising in popularity among Gen Zers.

Lavender/lilac is one of the 7 colors that will be everywhere in 2023.

An emerging color trend that demonstrates the power of newly initiated Gen-Z consumers is the rise of soft, dusty shades of lavender and lilac. 1stDibs, the digital antiques marketplace, saw interest in lavender spike in 2022, up to 14 percent over 6 percent approval the previous year. WGSN forecasters, meanwhile, spotted the shade—which they’ve dubbed “Digital Lavender”—everywhere from Jil Sanders collections to Mercedes-Benz concept vehicles to Andrés Reisinger virtual furniture.

Riberti, along with WGSN’s color strategist Clare Smith, predict the color will dominate tabletop and soft furnishings, in addition to our walls. “It’s a sensorial shade that connects to holistic well-being and digital optimism,” they tell us. “This shade poses that much-needed cautious optimism and escapism that people are craving post-pandemic, and even in times of budget crunch, it is imaginative and creative but also speaks of hope and balance.”

It also speaks to nostalgia: Smith and Riberti have noticed it paired with chrome, glass, and other reflective surfaces, an indication that the ’80s are officially back. 1stDibs also saw a correlation between soft powdery pastels and an increase in ’80s-era interest.

Orange: Flame orange is dousing some walls lately.

Flame orange is one of the 7 colors that will be everywhere in 2023.

Orange, as Pantone’s Eiseman pointed out, has consistently remained “at the bottom of the totem pole.” But her team’s research has indicated that the hue is “definitely on board for next year.” It’s a trend also mirrored in WGSN’s reporting: “Saturated tones will return yet in solid color statements, enabling new forms of self-expression,” Riberti says, like fiery orange. And while some designers might opt for saturated versions of the shade on walls, many will use the pigment to add pop to furnishings and accents. “It’s the combination,” Eiseman says. “There are creative opportunities to put colors together that really tax your imagination.” (I’ll add: in a good way)

But homeowners and designers are also drawn to earthier, terra-cotta-tinged shades. In fact, according to 1stDibs’s latest trend research, burnt orange was its third most popular color, behind (you guessed it) emerald and sage green.

Light Brown: Milk chocolate never looked so delectable.

Light brown is one of the 7 colors that will be everywhere in 2023.

Forget gray; brown is 2023’s new neutral. In fact, all varieties of this cozy shade are appearing in the color-forecasting tea leaves. “Light browns, dark browns, and beiges are making a comeback because of their earthiness, meaning they ground us and help us feel more connected to the beauty and restorative properties of nature,” says Wadden of Sherwin-Williams.

Before you start getting flashbacks of generic ’90s tract home dens, consider the versatility of today’s beige: “What we’re seeing with the neutrals is that there are many more nuanced neutrals that seem to have an undertone that really pops out at you,” says Pantone’s Eiseman. ELLE DECOR editors are also spotting a variety of finishes with these trending tints, ranging from lustrous taupe lacquer to textured limewash in spaces from kitchens to bedrooms.

Mustard: For ’70s flare, you might try giving your walls a mustard makeover.

Mustard is one of the 7 colors that will be everywhere in 2023.

Do you prefer honey or dijon? Yellow or hearty whole grain? Whatever your preference for mustard, it’s a go for 2023 colors. In addition to Raspberry Blush, Benjamin Moore named the khaki-colored Savannah Green as part of its forecast for next year. “Almost like gold leaf for your walls, this rich ochre features a balanced undertone of green and yellow,” the hue’s description reads. Chairish, the vintage furniture online marketplace, saw an increase in searches for mustard-colored items on its platform. For our part, we’ve been seeing varieties of mustard everywhere from walls to textured bouclés.

Rose: A lovely, warm unexpected neutral in 2023 colors.

Rose is one of the 7 colors that will be everywhere in 2023.

Next year’s outlook is rosy, according to color forecasters—from bright fuchsias to delicate, neutral-leaning pinks. On the subtle end of the spectrum, Sherwin-Williams inaugurated Redend Point, a serene gray-pink, as its 2023 Color of the Year. “This gorgeous hue tells a story about warmth, exploration, and the importance of self-care, and is the perfect example of the warm, versatile, and unexpected neutrals we expect will become increasingly sought after in 2023,” Wadden tells us.

Pantone, meanwhile, named Viva Magenta! as its frontrunner for 2023 colors – a jubilant purply red that felt in line with the digital-first zeitgeist and “this idea of needing more energy, more vim and more vigor,” Eiseman tells us. Mauve is also making moves, 1stDibs predicts; the company saw a 4 percent increase in interest for mauve in 2022, another indication that the ’80s vibes are in our future.

And there’s more: Benjamin Moore named Raspberry Blush 2008-30 as its color-to-watch of 2023. “We love seeing Raspberry Blush on all four walls to make a bold color statement,” Arianna Cesa, the company’s associate manager of color marketing and development notes. “We particularly love it in a dining room as a modern, blushed update on the classic deep red dining room. For those who want to dip their toe into bold color, it’s great for an accent wall, a ceiling, painted furniture, or trim.”

Powder Blue: A feel-good soft trend that adds balance.

Powder blue is one of the 7 colors that will be everywhere in 2023.

Softness has been trending in a major way across the homefront, ranging from amorphous shapes to fuzzy finishes. It’s also appearing in our homes via pale, powdery blues in particular. Experts say it exemplifies a collective desire for calm in a crazy world: “Luminous powdery sky blues and barely-there pastels will speak to the need for softness and for balance, and help support physical and mental health,” Riberti predicts. Chairish, meanwhile, predicted “French blue,” a pretty cornflower hue, will be appearing increasingly in furnishings and accessories. The sky, apparently, is the limit with this feel-good tint.

Pantone Color of the Year 2023: Viva Magenta!

Pantone Color of the Year 2023: Viva Magenta!

It’s a big day when paint company Pantone announces their Color of the Year. The 2023 Pantone Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, is a color that is already trending in the fashion and beauty world and now it’s making its way into interior design.

Just like in previous years, Pantone’s choices for this year’s trending colors are rooted in nature. But Pantone always chooses a color that has a little more edge than other paint companies.

Last year, Pantone chose Very Peri as their Color of the Year, a daring and carefree blue shade that was certainly bolder than the other blue and green shades that were trending. And this year we see a similar interior color trend, the colors are warmer and in Pantone’s case a lot bolder.

Read on to learn more about Viva Magenta, the Pantone Color of the Year 2023, and how you can use this bold color in your interiors, and sometimes enhanced, or subdued with complimentary color schemes.

Make any space come alive with a pop of Viva Magenta

A Deeper Dive into the Origin, Meaning, and Nuances of Viva Magenta

The story behind Viva Magenta is all about the balance between our digital and physical lives. In recent years, we have responded and reacted with a greater pull toward the natural world, and the Pantone Color of the Year 2023 is chosen to reflect our pull toward natural colors and the movement surrounding sustainability, and ecology.

In recent years, and perhaps as a response to covid and lockdowns, etc., an increased love for nature has also been reflected in our homes, not just with paint colors but also by adding plants, florals (live flowers, prints, and wallcoverings), and living walls to our interiors. And by paying more attention to our outdoor spaces.

Our current lifestyle trends are at the heart of the Color of the Year selection process. And Pantone feels that Viva Magenta is the perfect rich shade for these times. The origin of Viva Magenta comes from the cochineal beetle. This insect produces carmine dye, one of the most precious, strongest, and brightest colors of the natural dye family.

This year’s color merges the richness, warmth, and strength of the natural world with the rich, open horizons of the digital world. The result is a red shade that celebrates life, Viva Magenta is a bold shade that also adds a fun touch to your home.

Viva Magenta adds fun pops of color to your spaces.

How Viva Magenta Can Be Used In Your Home

For a bold statement, you can opt for a magenta feature wall or sofa. But it can also be added as an accenting pop of color through curtains, rugs, pillows, or flowers. Viva Magenta certainly adds a warm and dramatic tone to any room of the house.

Living Rooms are a Great Place to Start

One interior photo shows how you can test the waters with one or two pieces of furniture. Sure, it’s a bit of a commitment, but it also makes a lovely bold statement.

This living room shows a neutral base with white walls, shelves, and furniture that is spruced up with a bold pink rug.

If pink walls are a bridge too far for you, consider painting the ceiling. Ceilings are often a forgotten component, but you can add such an impactful colorful statement to any room by painting the ceiling as you can see in this photo of a home library crowned with a hot pink ceiling.

Viva Magenta on the ceiling? Of course!

Viva Magenta in Kitchens

This home is festooned with colorful wallpapers. But their love for color continues with this hot pink kitchen. The boldness of these rich pink kitchen cabinets looks pretty stunning.

Another easy test of the color of Viva Magenta is to use a dining area rug.

Detouring from the kitchen, and going back to the living room, here is another green and pink example showing a playful pop of color in a more traditional sofa setting.

You can add bold color accents with textiles, decor, and art but why not make a statement with furniture? These built-in cabinets add a vibrant pink color touch to a blue and white kitchen.

This Bold Color in Bedrooms

To make a bold pink like Pantone’s Viva Magenta truly pop you can combine it with darker color tones. This moody gray bedroom shows exactly that, the walls and floor are painted in a dark shade but with a pink throw and rug, you add a joyful pop to the room.

Pantone’s Viva Magenta Color Palette

Pantone has also released a color palette with complimentary shades for Viva Magenta. This color palette mainly features light, neutral, natural shades that will make the Pantone Color of the Year 2023 stand out.

bottom row: Pale Khaki – Fields of Rye – Agate Gray – Plein Air

Besides these neutral color tones, you may have noticed other color combinations in the images here. For a natural look, you can combine Viva Magenta with green and blue. If you want the 2023 color to really stand out you can combine it with dark gray. Or you can go for a full pink look, where dusty pink tones form the neutral base of your room with magenta color accents.

Viva Magenta adds the right amount of pop in this already colorful bathroom. It's very much at home with the rich blue and other accent colors.

How do you feel about the Pantone Color of the Year 2023: Viva Magenta? Do you enjoy the bold color, or is it too much for you? Truth be told, I’m still forming my opinion, but some of you will have immediate gut reactions to it. Let me know your thoughts, especially if you’d like to explore using this color in your spaces – I can help you test the waters.

Raspberry Blush, Benjamin Moore's 2023 Color of the Year

Benjamin Moore’s 2023 Color of the Year Is Raspberry Blush

The fiery red-orange will inspire you to break out of your color comfort zone.

Over the last several years, muted colors have encouraged serenity in our homes. Last year, it was all about green, fostering a connection with nature. Now, Benjamin Moore is looking to a bolder, more courageous future with its Color of the Year for 2023: Raspberry Blush (2008-30). The saturated red-orange is basically the best color in a really good sunset, and it’ll inspire you to break free from your color comfort zone.

Paint bold walls with the 2023 color of the year.

“It’s a really charismatic color and doesn’t sit quietly on the wall,” says Andrea Magno, color marketing and development director at Benjamin Moore. “It’s about awakening our senses and getting people to engage with a vivacious color.”

Make your kitchen come alive with the 2023 color of the year.

The 2023 color of the year is a trend toward warmer hues

Notably, Raspberry Blush marks a pull toward warmer hues. “We’ve had colors that are on the cooler side of the color wheel for a number of years, and now we’re really starting to see a shift to the warmer colors,” Magno says.

Try a piece of furniture painted in the 2023 color of the year.

Playing with Raspberry Blush can mean blanketing your walls with it—like as a modern take on the red dining room of the past—or incorporating it in a smaller way through a painted piece of furniture. No matter how much surface area you allot for the color, it’ll bring high energy into any space.

A throw lets you test the waters with the 2023 color of the year.

Exciting colors trending for 2023

Raspberry Blush also sets the stage for Benjamin Moore’s color trends palette for 2023. The eight-color palette features an eclectic mix of colors with nostalgic references to periods like the ’80s and ’90s as well as deeply saturated hues found in the wild. “A lot of times people talk about (and we’ve done it, too) looking at nature as a point of inspiration,” Magno explains. “But for this year, instead of looking at more organic, vegetal colors, we were looking at the standout colors—the fiery colors of a sunset, tropical flowers, the depths of the Mediterranean.”

Benjamin Moore's 2o23 color trends palette.

To celebrate Raspberry Blush, Benjamin Moore tapped the electro-funk duo Chromeo to bring the color’s personality to life through a new song fittingly called “Raspberry Blush.” You can also find eight playlists dedicated to each color in the palette on Spotify for an immersive visual and audible experience—perfect for putting on the loudspeaker as you give your home a paint refresh!

Cellular or honeycomb shades have many attractive features, and made even more attractive with advances in technology and fabrication.

Cellular Shades: Attractive and Efficient Solutions

Versatile, attractive, and energy-efficient, cellular shades (also known as honeycomb shades because the materials used to make them have a unique cell shape) are top of mind with many designers these days. Here, manufacturers are discussing what’s trending with this window treatment product.

The functionality and style of cellular shades make them a perfect solution for home and office

“The endless functional features and stylish appearance make honeycomb shades a perfect solution for both home and office,” says Jop Vos, managing director of Coulisse North and South America.

Control levels of natural light in any window setting with cellular shades.

Honeycomb shades are made from one continuous piece of fabric, fold up along crisp pleats and provide the highest level of insulation because of their honeycomb-shaped cells.

The unique honeycomb cells in cellular shades allows for great energy efficiency.

New colors, materials, and technology have cellular shades trending right now

Add in new colors, fabrications, and control options and cellular shades become even more on-trend.

“The demand for woven cellular shades is growing,” notes Kara Roberts, merchandising director of Smith & Noble.

Woven materials are increasing the popularity of cellular shades.

Roberts attributes the increased interest in cellular shades to several factors, including premium fade-resistant fabrics, the white backing that gives street-facing windows a cohesive appearance; the fashion-forward colors, the rich texture and sense of tactility because of the honeycomb cell construction, and the opportunity to secure flame-resistant fabrics and materials that are GREENGUARD certified.

Varying levels of light-filtering make them unique window treatment solutions

A specific cellular shade fabrication that is popular for home use is blackout which offers better sleep and more privacy. The ability of cellular shades to offer four different levels of opacity and varying levels of light-filtering is also what makes them unique.

With their versatility, Adam Skalman, vice president of sales at The Shade Store, says the various styles of honeycomb shades allow customers to easily customize them, which taps into the growing trend for the expression of personal styles and aesthetics.

Cellular shades are a perfect window treatment solution to situations with varying window sizes.

And because cellular shades offer a variety of honeycomb cell sizes, they also can accommodate various window sizes and climate issues.

Cellular shades can provide significant energy savings

“Large windows tend to use larger cell sizes and double-cell styles are often used to maximize energy savings,” explains John Weinstock, executive vice president of marketing at Graber.

And, over time, the double-cell shades’ insulation offers savings on heating and cooling costs.

Cellular shades offer a variety of cell sizes, providing options for greater energy savings.

Motorization and cordless technology make these window treatments even more attractive

And, according to Skalman, another important trend that cellular shades is capitalizing on is motorization and automation. “There is a desire to be able to effortlessly control natural light,” he acknowledges.

Motorization is easy to implement and works effortlessly with honeycomb shades. And this emphasis on cordless technology is in line with the window covering industry’s goal of enhancing child and pet safety by continuing to eliminate lift cords.

Cordless, motorized cellular honeycomb shades.

“Improving (the industry’s) lift systems in order to offer larger sizes in cordless and motorization is a goal of ours,” says Roberts.

Cellular shades create calm, inviting spaces with control of natural light

And with the continual growth of the work-from-home trend, it is essential to create home office environments that are perfect for videoconferencing with conducive lighting and attractive backdrops.

“Calm, inviting spaces with great light control are key features of a home office, making cellular shades an ideal solution,” emphasizes Weinstock.

Cellular shades offer many options and styles for a designer to create calm and inviting spaces.

If cellular shades sound like a great solution for your spaces, let’s have a conversation

Cellular shades are such an attractive window treatment, and as indicated in this article, there have been many exciting updates in their fabrication. New colors, materials, and technology are making this a wonderful window treatment solution for just about any space.

Patterns & colors abound in new window covering trends.

Window Covering Trends for 2022

From the International Window Covering Expo held in April 2022

From customized designs and new colors to increased motorization and technology, read what some manufacturers are predicting for the future.

Expectations of traditional window treatments have changed due to the massive adjustment in the functionality of offices, health care, and other commercial spaces. Additionally, over the last two years, homeowners have also shifted to re-creating rooms and practical spaces to adapt to working from home. This has certainly led to an increased demand for motorization and other smart home technology, as well as personalized custom design, all of which are on a growth trajectory and constantly evolving.

Technology and motorization are big trends for home window treatments in 2022.

Motorization and Roller Shades

While trends in colors, fabrics, and window covering styles are always developing in response to cultural, environmental, and other influences, some trends continue to remain at the forefront, especially motorization. Steve Wright, CEO and president of Forest Drapery, foresees “continued growth in motorized window treatments, especially in the roller shade category.” Tim Sanders, president of SmartPad Pro, concurs. “Roller shades and motorization will continue to be the mainstream product in the hospitality and commercial fields.”

Roller shades and motorization will continue to be the mainstream product in the hospitality and commercial fields.

Where roller shades were more predominantly specified for commercial spaces in the past, they are now a must-have for certain rooms in residential properties, including, but not limited to, the home office as the shift to working from home continues to grow. “Interior roller shades specified with blackout fabrics will continue to emerge as a necessity for homeowners,” says Market Manager Gregg Terry of Phifer.

Window Covering Trends: Performance and Color

In addition to continued growth in automation and the increased use of commercial window coverings in home residences, charting the benefits and performance qualities with customers becomes even more essential in 2022. Marketing Director Holly Bridwell of Mermet Sun Control Textiles USA stresses the importance of elevating the fabric selection process with clients by making the interaction a “design consultation on performance—not only about fabric aesthetics and color,” and adds that blackouts, notably in the popular gray, charcoal and white families, will continue to trend. Weighing in on color trends, Wright also notes that “color choices are varied, yet fabrics will be trending toward neutrals and textures.” Elegant and versatile white, beige and gray tones, as well as textured blackout and light-filtering color-coordinating options, will carry on as a widespread choice in both residential and hospitality environments.

Elegant and versatile white, beige and gray tones, as well as textured blackout and light-filtering color-coordinating options, will carry on as a widespread choice in both residential and hospitality environments

Color Matching, New Aesthetics, and Customization

While grays and neutrals may be here to stay—at least for now—designers continue to experiment with color, including greens, rich blues, and other bold hues. These colors are often mixed with innumerous textures for a more engaging presentation. Ryan Crist, director of sales and marketing at Texton, explains how end-users and designers are increasingly seeking “exact color match” and “close pairing” of shades with drapery. “End users want to customize a drapery color to match an existing paint color or textile swatch.” They will continue their demand for customized products and color match to ensure their shades are unique and personalized.

Nevertheless, the overall minimalist, modern and casual aesthetic continues to be a fashionable choice for both commercial and residential spaces. Mikala Moller, vice president of marketing at Rowley, agrees that trend will persist. “From a design perspective, that aesthetic creates comfort and harmony in a space. It is also a trend that has had longevity in window treatment design with streamlined shades, grommet and ripple fold draperies, and plated metal and acrylic drapery hardware styles. These will continue to hold strong in 2022.”

On the other hand, the desire for increased personalization and layering of design elements is notable. From this movement, there has been a resurgence of maximalism and layered looks that tell a story, inspired by cultural influences like “House of Gucci.” It’s driving heightened demand for more traditional window treatment styles in soft shades, drapery embellishments, swags, and hand-painted and mixed-media drapery hardware.

There is a heightened demand for more traditional window treatment styles in soft shades, drapery embellishments, swags, and hand-painted and mixed-media drapery hardware.

Commercial and Residential Crossover Trends

Interestingly, design trends from the commercial world are now making their way into residential design. “This includes tonal textures, as well as large abstract graphic prints that are often macro-focused,” offers Crist. Additional trends from the commercial world are making their way to residential spaces, including more emphasis on bringing the outside and natural design aspects into textile, shade, and furniture design, which is often referred to as “biophilia.” Sanders suggests that the industry will continue to see an “increase in many architectural designs creating spaces with more natural light and interior experiences with the outdoor in mind.”

Natural materials and textures are big in window shade coverings trending for 2022.

All trends considered, with current supply chain disruptions, it is reasonable that some in the industry are uneasy but hopeful. Depending upon the type of window covering system, shortage or delay in shipment of critical components will continue in 2022. “These could be as minor as the chains or fasteners used in roller shades to coatings and paints used for fabrics or header boxes,” says Terry. Therefore, it is key is to manage expectations about availability and deadlines to maintain customers’ trust and ongoing business and referrals.

The Future of the Window Covering Industry

The window covering industry, like all industries, continues to advance sustainability awareness in its products. And for many companies showcasing products at the IWCE show, this has been an ongoing initiative, not necessarily a new trend. Wright cites Forest Drapery Hardware’s longstanding commitment to sustainable sourcing. “Since the introduction of our wood drapery hardware more than 25 years ago, these products have been sourced from managed forests, a practice that will continue into the future.” Forest Drapery’s tracks and decorative metal hardware are also made with high-quality materials to extend the life of their products, reducing waste.

An expanded focus on technology is also critical to the industry’s future increase of new revenue and value-producing opportunities. Bridwell contends that growth will come from an intensified attention to digital marketing and sampling as well as leveraging data for growth. “In-person and live virtual design consultations will support higher prices and margins over DIY.” Judy Wong, president of Senbesta, agrees that having fabric swatch samples readily available to share with clients is essential, no matter how you meet. “Whether that be at an in-person meeting or a virtual meeting, by sending them a few 8 x 11 swatches by mail, these samples allow your client to see and feel the product up close.”

Many different material styles, colors, textures and patterns continue to make the industry grow by leaps and bounds.

Likewise, collaboration with other professionals through social media and other virtual tools is of the utmost importance for the window covering industry. Over the last two years, the pandemic has put some hurdles in the way that people connect with each other, yet the industry has continued to thrive. Wong raves about how “refreshing” it has been seeing professionals come together on LinkedIn and Facebook to share information. “I am amazed by how quickly the industry is adapting to changes and how engaged our industry has become with social media. I think it is wonderful to see this community supporting each other and interacting on these platforms.”

Finally, the manufacturing and distribution of window coverings and accessories worldwide is an unquestionable facet of its future. “The window covering industry is expected to continue to grow worldwide with customer growth mainly coming from the U.S. and Asia,” acknowledges Sanders. Regardless of their global reach, companies in the industry who stay focused on offering new or innovative products, providing customer-focused solutions, and offering the latest advances in user-friendly technology should be positioned best for the future marketplace.

Layering different window treatment styles, colors and patterns is trending for 2022.

10 Benefits of Motorized Window Treatments

Automation Welcomes Us Into the Future!

Smart homes are one of many great leaps we’ve made into the future; if you’re not already controlling your appliances, lights, HVAC, and security systems from your phone or tablet, you will be soon – and that includes motorized window treatments.

Voice-controlled devices like Amazon Alexa®, Google Home®, and Apple Homepod® are also quickly gaining popularity and becoming a staple in homes across the U.S. It’s no surprise either, with their ability to play music, set alarms, and tell you the weather forecast or latest news upon request – they simply make everyday life easier.

These innovative devices are fueling the growing trend to adopt smart home benefits and efficiency; and like many industries, window treatment manufacturers have taken notice of the need for automated products. “Alexa… open the living room shades” is now part of the smart-home mix!

smart home automation includes window coverings

The top window covering manufacturers that I represent have embraced emerging technologies, creating intelligent hubs and motorization that make it much easier to integrate your shades, blinds, shutters, or draperies with home automation systems. There are many benefits to going motorized; syncing your window treatments to work in perfect harmony with your smart lights, thermostat, and entertainment systems is only one of many highly sought-after advantages.

The Best Benefits of Having Motorized Window Treatments

1. Simplicity

With the push of one button, you can control single shades or every shade in the room simultaneously. No longer will you have to struggle with hard-to-reach windows that are behind furniture or up too high. If you have lots of windows, automation will help you save a little time every day and night that you can use however you’d like. Do you have elderly parents? Motorized shades and blinds eliminate the difficulty of reaching for or manually operating their window treatments. With Christmas just not too far away, right now is the perfect time to treat yourself or your parents to a simpler life.

2. Style and Sophistication

There’s something deliciously luxurious about using your voice or the push of a button to open or close your window coverings. Motorization and smart home automation allow you to easily respond to the mood of the moment, effortlessly and easily. And you can stay focused on what held your attention in the first place, without having to get up and manually open or close your coverings. It also goes without saying that there’s an inherent big “Wow!” factor as well. My clients tell me the convenience factor is worth its weight in gold!

Enjoy your moments more with motorization

3. Lower Energy Bills

Solar power, proper insulation, and more have been a growing trend in homeowners’ efforts to more effectively manage their energy consumption and lower their bills.Installing motorized shades, sheers, and blinds can definitely help you increase energy efficiency. With automated, hub-based systems, it’s easy to integrate your window treatments with smart thermostats, like the Nest® Ecobee® Lyric® or Honeywell®, allowing you to control room temperature with window adjustments before using the HVAC system to heat or cool your home. Integrating a sun sensor with your smart-home devices means your blinds can lower or rise on their own even if you’re away. This important feature helps manage your home’s heat gain during summer months and heat loss in the wintertime.

4. Improve Home Resale Value. with Motorized Window Treatments

Since most window treatments are attached directly to the home, more and more buyers expect that they’ll be included in their purchase. Today, motorized shades and blinds are especially desirable and in high demand by prospective home buyers for their ease of use, ability to synch with smart-home devices, and green features that boost energy efficiency. Definitely a win-win!

5. Set the Mood

Need some mood lighting for a special occasion or while entertaining? Your voice command, phone app, or remote-controlled window treatments will gladly assist. It’s easy to store predefined room “scenes” to orchestrate and manage your artificial light, favorite music, and more to create the perfect setting. I’d love to show you the options available.

6. Boost Privacy

Motorized window treatments are a favorite among homeowners who enjoy their privacy. Do you have windows in close proximity to a neighbor’s house or worry that passersby can easily peer through your windows from the street? Simply push a button to lower your shades at any time and even set up automated scenes to close your window coverings at the desired times daily. For these kinds of situations, many homeowners like the top-down, bottom-up feature of honeycomb shades the most, and they can also be easily motorized and automated.

Answers to Some of Your Motorization Questions

Motorized Window Treatments? Answers to Your Questions

While my clients love to have their window treatments motorized, going that route is often accompanied by a lot of questions, which is understandable. I’ve compiled a list of the most common questions here, along with helpful answers and guidance.

What are some of the key benefits of motorized window treatments?

Here are three key reasons behind going the smart home/motorization route:

Safety: Smart window coverings make spaces safer, as children and pets can no longer get tangled in hazardous loops or control cords. And thanks to preset scenes and timers, smart window coverings are continuously in motion, making your home always seem inhabited. It creates a sense of security and helps to prevent break-ins.

Energy efficiency: Smart window coverings are able to automatically adapt to changing conditions inside and outside the home. This makes it possible for you to regulate the indoor climate and save energy by making the best use of the insulating properties of window coverings.

motorization makes raising, lowering, and opening your window treatments so easy and convenient. your

Convenience: Smart window coverings make everyday life even more enjoyable. As part of a smart home ecosystem, where various smart devices such as smart lighting and thermostats seamlessly work together, window coverings automatically move to the rhythm of your daily life, creating the perfect atmosphere at any time.

So you can see that the key benefits of smart window coverings perfectly align with the main motivators for people choosing to make their homes smart. The extra investment makes life safer, more energy-efficient, and more comfortable. These are major considerations when deciding upon motorized window treatments.

Motorization always seems expensive…I love the “wow” factor, but I’d still like you to help me justify it in my thinking.

Think about the benefits of energy cost savings that motorized shades provide. Many motorized platforms present unique features like sunrise/sunset detection to seamlessly automate a shading system. Also, energy-efficient homeowner rebate programs are currently in development through the Attachments Energy Rating Council and nationwide utility providers, further supporting the energy benefits of motorized window treatments.

In addition to energy savings, motorized window coverings deliver on their promise of convenience. Many popular motorized shading systems are designed with a wide range of features that enable effortless control of a motorized shade. Through devices such as push-button remotes, voice assistants, or home automation systems, my clients have greater flexibility to personalize how they interact with their shades.

Motorization gives a big "wow" factor!

Many existing manual shades, blinds, and drapery systems can be converted to a motorized operation with retrofit capabilities through motor offerings. My customers always have the option to purchase new motorized systems for key areas in the home and opt to upgrade existing systems now or later to spread out their investment.

Did you know I offer motorized plantation shutters too! Way cool convenience! Sorry for the pun.

And let’s not forget, one of the key reasons for motorizing your window treatments is that it is a child- and pet-safe solution for the home, keeping our loved ones safe from the potential hazards chain and cord shading solutions present. That alone is very important to many of my clients.

The connected home continues to be a growing trend, and motorized window treatments are a natural fit to expand your home’s capabilities.

Automation for smart window coverings.

Do you need different motors to power different window treatments like shades, shutters, and drapes?

Yes, there are different motors for large or small windows and roller shades, draperies, roman shades, shutters, blinds, and even transitional shades. There are many reasons for this. A motor that powers a shade is different in form than a motor that powers a motorized drapery track. Other factors are the size of the shade and the weight of the fabric being motorized. All of that has to be taken into account. Plus, my clients need to decide whether they want a wired solution or a battery-powered solution.

Do I need my electrical system reworked to accommodate motorization?

Many motorized window treatments run on household batteries which means they can be installed anywhere in the home without requiring a nearby power socket. And they’re rechargeable, so you can get good functionality from battery operation. There’s no need for special electrical rewiring with the variety of options available. Since rechargeable batteries can last for many years without being replaced, these blinds require minimum maintenance – and they’re super quiet.

Tell me more specifically about motorizing my draperies.

Motorized drapery hardware’s control technology should be able to be controlled with the touch of a button, simple voice commands, and third-party devices. Motors should be quiet, so sound levels need to be checked upfront too, along with warranties.  And these days, even a manufacturer’s reputation is important.

Motorized draperies.

Another factor that I have to work with is matching the motor to the drapery’s weight. It’s essential to know and verify that your draperies can operate seamlessly no matter the length, weight, or area the treatment covers. Aesthetically, I look for decorative motorized products that complement my design and what my clients want to achieve. I choose motorized drapery products that offer the same details that decorative hardware does, as well as a wide choice of finishes, rod sizes, and a host of other specifics relative to the window covering process.

What do I need to know about motorizing very large shades, screens, or other window treatments?

Shades can be motorized practically without a size limit. In fact, motorization is key to enabling the proper function of the largest of shades, as they cannot easily be opened or closed by a person without motorization.

The good news is these systems for large window coverings still operate inexpensively with current radio frequency remote controllers and home automation hubs, so we can take advantage of all the systems currently available (e.g., Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant) to command even the largest of shades, shutters, and blinds.

Motorized kitchen window coverings.

It all seems very complicated. Is there anything simpler?

If you are looking for a more price-conscious way to motorize window treatments without the use of remotes, consider a motorized wand. It’s a simple and affordable solution, and motorized wands offer intuitive operation with a three-button controller. As a safer alternative to corded lift options, these wands can provide function as well as peace of mind.

When is it appropriate to use a solar battery charger?

Although solar panel efficiency relies on numerous factors (the direction it’s facing, shadows going over the window during the day, the height of the window, etc.), in most cases, solar panels are more than enough to charge a blind’s motor. Because solar chargers typically need a few seconds of some really good sun to get started, it can be difficult to get them working in some locations during darker months of the year (but we rarely have that problem here in Florida). However, newer solar systems are more efficient and can provide enough energy for proper functioning even in isolated conditions.

I was thinking about motorization for my office in a different location. Is there a difference between residential and commercial motorization?

Motorization is essentially similar between residential and commercial projects in that they both utilize motors to provide hands-free operation of blinds and shades. However, commercial and residential projects have several key differences.

Commercial projects are typically focused on energy efficiency and worker productivity. Utilizing the combined data from weather sensors, central control units, occupancy sensors, and temperature sensors, commercial window treatments become an integral part of keeping the workforce comfortable and the building sustainable.

Automated commercial shades

While automation is still often an essential part of a residential project, the integrations are much simpler, easier to install, and focused on on-demand use and predictable scheduling. For example, residential motorization is often integrated into the Amazon Echo or Google Home system for voice commands such as, “OK Google, raise my living room shades.” Further, scheduling the window treatments’ movements in residential projects typically revolves around optimizing one’s home experience by coordinating the shades’ movements with routines, such as waking up, watching TV, and going to bed.

In a larger context, commercial solutions can dynamically manage the movement of shades across many zones to allow any size building to have highly specialized climate control depending on how each part of the building is impacted by the sun, occupancy, and temperature throughout the day. As a result, sophisticated commercial automated shading solutions also require a commercial specialist with greater expertise to design and install that kind of system.

What are the differences between indoor and outdoor motorization hardware? What about outdoor hardware in particular?

With motorized indoor shading, you typically attach the product—valance, rollers, headrail, brackets, etc.—at the top of the window only. Power (low voltage or high voltage) is typically routed down through the header to the motor location. For battery-powered systems, you might have a solar panel to consider. Radio motors are popular for many applications.

With outdoor shading, there are more considerations. The product will face the elements and wind, which means it will need side guides. In some products, these are guide wires and in others, they are metal channels. I have to consider the whole opening, including how to anchor side guidance to the structure, leveling, and aesthetics. Manufacturers carry channel adaptors to help install side channels secure and parallel, which is critical. Adaptors are aluminum pieces that help the installation look and perform its best.

Motorized shades for changing outdoor light and conditions

Power is another important consideration. Due to the heavier product and environment, higher-voltage, slower-RPM motors are required. Radio obstacle detection motors are popular options for outdoor applications.

Any tips for a great smart hub experience with using my motorized window treatments?

The single most important tip I provide to my clients and customers is to keep it simple. I recommend that my clients keep their commands simple and specific. For example, a good command would be “Living Room Close” or “Ryan’s Room Open”. By keeping the commands simple, they become easy for all users to remember. Making statements difficult can lead to users forgetting the commands and make the automated hubs ineffective and less user-friendly.

Motorized shades set the mood

I’m concerned about the security of the device that will be used to operate my motorized treatments. How can I be sure that this technology is safe and won’t get hacked?

In spite of recent events showing us that there are vulnerabilities in technology, there are a number of safety nets that should put you at ease.

First, there are systems where all actions and equipment are encrypted. This keeps them protected at a very high level. The software is constantly being updated, both so it performs at its best and security stays very strong. These updates are done wirelessly, are encrypted, and require no additional effort by the user.

smart home automation is so convenient for window treatments.

Like smartphones, many automation systems have privacy features that can be turned on and off. For example, some systems have an option for geolocation accessibility so my clients can have the motors go up or down based on sunrise and sunset. This location information is set to a low-precision value (specific to a city or region, for example, but not an address) so that the data is efficient while not being invasive. There are no logs kept of product usage. This feature can also be turned off.

And finally, we can look for manufacturers who don’t monetize the data they get from smart home devices. Many companies these days will give you a low-cost product in exchange for your private information. Others will not ask for or collect personal data, which gives you the greatest option for protecting your data and home. This can (and should) be verified upfront if this is a major consideration.

I hope this has given you a better understanding of various aspects and considerations for the motorization of your window coverings. If you’re considering going this route, I’m always available for a consultation to help you determine the best kind of motorization for your needs, lifestyle, and goals. Interior Design Trends to Know in 2021

With all of us having to stay in our homes and turning inward, the past year has created a push towards new interior design trends for 2021. It used to be that our homes were a place for just a part of our lives. Much of the day was spent at the workplace, with a commute by train, bus, or car on either end. Often, we’d have plans for before and after work too: maybe an early morning spin class, or a dinner at a favorite neighborhood restaurant. Simply put: many of us weren’t actually in our houses or apartments that much.

The coronavirus pandemic changed all that. Now, much of America is working, socializing, exercising (and, well, doing almost everything that ends in -ing) from our homes. And as we adjust the way we live, we’re also adjusting the spaces we live in.

So it makes sense that when several top interior designers were asked what home trends we’re likely to see in 2021, one word dominated above all: comfort. “Comfort, practicality, and making your home your sanctuary on every level,” says Martyn Lawrence Bullard. “Comfort in all forms is becoming more paramount,” says Timothy Corrigan. “Comfort over concept,” says Roman and Williams co-founder Robin Standefer. “The importance of comfort, wellness, and sustainability will continue to be a priority,” says Sheila Bridges.

comfortable sofas, living room, calm colors

2021 interior design trends: It’s All About Comfort – So What Does Comfort Look Like?

What does comfy look like, exactly? Think plushy, sink-into furniture, chestnut woods, warm colors, overflowing bookshelves (but not the color-coordinated kind, rather, ones stocked with tattered covers of novels you’ve read and loved). Less mass-produced furniture and more reworking of passed-down family pieces or ones you already own. (There’s nothing more thrilling than giving new life to ancestral pieces,” says Kathryn Ireland.) Fluffy towels, luxurious candles, objets d’art from local artisans rather than e-commerce giants. Essentially: “The trend is to embrace what lasts, what’s well made, and what makes you smile,” says Standefer.

We will also be reworking our homes to, well, work: as offices remain closed across the country, people are investing in making their own Zoom-friendly spaces.

As a result of our newfound focus on 24/7 livability, some previously hot trends are falling fast out of favor. The decline of mid-century modern, once the design choice du jour, continues: “While the mid-century look was very popular, now that people are actually hanging out in their living spaces for hours at a time, there is a strong trend towards furniture that is big on soft, comfy sofas and chairs that allow you to lounge with ease,” says Timothy Corrigan. Robert McKinley also predicts a similar fate for another style: minimalism. “I think minimalism will begin to go by the wayside in 2021,” he says. “As we spend more time in our homes, we need more objects to hold our attention. All that empty space can be suffocating.” Oh, and perhaps back off of the beige. “The all-beige catalog look is out,” proclaims Ireland. “Be bold and decorate with conviction.”

How the Experts See Interior Design Trending for 2021

2021 interior design trends

Seven experts share how unprecedented times will affect interior tastes and the trends they will usher in.

“With everyone spending more time at home, there is a renewed emphasis on rooms that not only look good but can live up to increased use. Durability will continue to be more important and we will see a rise in using outdoor materials inside the home: there are so many great outdoor fabric options that allow you to make a mess and not worry about the clean-up, without having to sacrifice beauty.” -Timothy Corrigan,  Timothy Corrigan Inc.

“Wallpaper and pattern play will continue to dominate rather than subtle, more monochromatic schemes.” -Sheila Bridges, Sheila Bridges Home

“As we spend more time in our homes, we need more objects to hold our attention—all that empty space can be suffocating. I’m not advocating for clutter, however. I’d say that 2021 will be a year of attributing meaning to carefully selected pieces—the year of the craftsperson, the artist, the artisan.” -Robert McKinley, Studio McKinley

statement piece of furniture

“Most of us used to just sleep and shower in our spaces, but now people are really investing more time, money, and energy into decor details, bringing meaningful small goods and statement pieces into their homes. We’re paying attention to everything from what we’re drinking water out of, to the kind of bath towels we use.” -Harry Nuriev, Crosby Studios

Bringing More Warmth into Our Environments

“We are loving warm cinnamon and marigolds. Those rich oranges, chestnuts, warm woods, bring some heat and spice to a room.” -Robin Standefer and Steven Alesch, Roman and Williams

the warm chestnut colors, woods

“Real decorating is back in—colors, textures, a mix of old and new. Repurpose things. Shuffle artwork around. Move furniture to another room. Re- accessorize what you have rather than starting over. Keep the pieces that have meaning.” -Kathryn M. Ireland

“Out for 2021. . . rooms with no purpose, rooms only used for high days and holidays, furniture that has no other function but to make a statement. In 2020 we learned our lives are for living and need to be lived out in the best way we possibly can. Needless excess is out, functionality and duality in the home is in.” -Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Martyn Lawrence Bullard Design

“We will see less beige and grey and more green, pink, and my favorite color, blue.” -Harry Nuriev

“Everyone can be transported through the use of pattern and color (muted and grounded shades mixed with brighter and more hopeful colors like yellows or bright greens).” -Sheila Bridges

bright cheery colorful walls and furniture

Brighter Spaces Putting Smiles on Faces

“Crisp, clear colors are continuing to grow in popularity with yellows, light blues/turquoises, and greens being used to brighten up spaces and put a smile on your face during these challenging times.” -Timothy Corrigan

comfortable furnishings living room

“I think we will move away from grand, sweeping styles and towards a rawer, more casual aesthetic. Homes will become textural and layered with elements of warmth—grounded elements. I expect that we will see design that is more regional and place-based than ever.” -Robert McKinley

“With people spending hours on Zoom calls, there has been an increase in popularity for table lamps that provide a soft glow on your face and counteracts the harshness of recessed overhead lighting that is found in so many homes today.” -Timothy Corrigan

“Sustainability is a consideration in design that will remain important—2020 slowed us down and made us take stock of our consumption. Sustainable, durable brands will continue to grow in prominence, especially in the home space.” -Robert McKinley

No Entryway? No Problem! Here are 5 Beautiful Solutions!

No Entryway? No Problem! Here are 5 Beautiful Solutions!

I’ve found some exciting ideas for creating what might be described as a “faux entryway”, especially useful for homes that don’t have a foyer! These DIY small-space solutions will help you hack your way to an entryway (whether you already have one or not) — like hanging shelves, narrow tables, and cute cubbies — so you can store more in your faux entryway with style.

1. Shelf Solution

Install a wall-mount shelf that can house keys, sunglasses, and other rushing out the door essentials, while a large mirror allows for last minute checks. Be sure to use a shallow shelf, or you can risk nicking the door each time it opens.

2. Another Shelf Solution

Create your own side table with a large corbel and interesting top, the chalkboard is the perfect place to scribble last-minute reminders.

3. Color Explosion

Let the accessories do the talking. An intricately-carved table topped with glossy orange lamps and turquoise knickknacks is impressively eye-catching against white walls. Stacks of books on the bottom shelf, which doubles as storage, adds additional touches of color.

4. Vintage Charm

Old furniture is perfect for repurposing. A vintage desk, dresser or armoire near the front door collects everyday items but is also a conversation piece. This particular piece evokes country French charm; fresh florals and a hinged lamp complement the look.

5. Italian Marble Top Entry Table

Marble tables look incredibly artistic, and when attached to a wall in this fashion, can make your entryway look like an art museum. The metal bottom with the details breaks the monotony of the table and gives it an additional focal point.

Let me know what you think of these ideas! Have you created something similar in your home? Would you like to? I can help you determine what works best for your interior situation – I’d love to hear from you, just message me here, right below this blog post or at the “contact” link, or you can email me at: carmen@sohointeriordesign.com And, of course, you can call me anytime at: (407) 947-7718.
